Adam Ollas Mattsson. Picked in the 7th round, ISS had him at 50. Seems like a lot of higher ranked guys slipped down. Could be a steal.

I want to hear someone from the scouting staff in why they were so high on Mcdonald?
He was 2nd behind Demko for CSS and ISS rankings for goalies

Choosing a goalie was a little curious, but I guess we have to have some faith in our scouts who have got us Seiloff, Wotherspoon, Gillies, Gaudreau, Baert, Poirer and Klimchuk in the last few years. He was rated as the #2 goalie, and considering all of the goalies that went after him he would not have been available at 54.

I don't mind choosing Smith at all, 6'7, made huge strides in his progression this year. Could be one of those guys that really progresses once he gets used to his big body. There must be a reason Mckeown slipped to 50, I'm gonna trust the scouts.

Ya, I like Granlund but I see him panning out as an excellent 3c who can play 2c when needed. We our 1/2 Cs in Bennett (Maybe even McDavid next year who knows) I could definitely see them shipping him out to get a guy like Coyle.

As for the 39 93 thing, I think 93 is a much better selling number than 39, so I predict that he'll be encouraged to stick with 93.

- Saskabush

That's where I see Granlund slotting too. But I'm not sure I see him slotting ahead of Monahan, Bennett, or Backlund. The first two on more offensive, but still having to be responsible, lines. Then Backlund being more of that shut down center with the offensive upside. Stajan is there to help shelter the two kids until they are completely ready. So where does Granlund play.

Shifting him to the left side means he has to slot ahead of, or at least for now find minutes within, Glencross, Hudler (sometimes on the right), Baertschi, Gaudreau, and Klimchuk (who I think will be perfect for that third line shut down role with Backlund). To the right side the team needs more right handed guys with size.

So use the asset in Granlund and convert him into a more usable asset. It's not taking a step back, it is taking a step sideways to a path that allows them to more easily push forward.

With their current group, prospects, and new draft picks things are moving towards

Gaudreau / Monahan / Poirier
Baertschi / Bennett / Colborne
Klimchuk / Backlund / Reinhart
Bouma / Knight / Smith

Far from perfect and still needs work, just working with what is currently there. But if you could convert a Granlund into a guy like Charlie Coyle he would fit perfect where Colborne is (I just don't see him as a long term spot on the team, but want to have him prove me wrong)

I wasn't expecting us to pick a goalie that high.... I wasn't expecting us to pick a goalie period
- The_Janitor

Ya goalies take forever to develop though. Hell, even Ortio is AT LEAST 3 years away from being able to take over full time (if he develops into a starter quality), and Gillies is probably a year or 2 behind him.

From what people are saying MacDonald has some sick skills but is raw, so I don't mind the pick. Seems really talented anyway.

Some rankings had him as the best goalie in the draft, but I can't believe that mckeown was still available and they passed on him
- Bigern4MVP

So did A LOT of teams....makes you think, they can't just go off the ISS rankings.

I don't blame him, he can't plan his life around the draft and NHL free agency given its on the Canada Day long weekend.....I blame whoever runs hockey buzz (*cough EKLUND cough*) Get someone to just post a summary of our picks so we have somewhere to discuss them! Hell, I could have posted that!!!

What are everyones expectations for Bennett next season? I hope he goes back to Junior, shreds the WJHC and comes in strong in 2 years. No need to rush him, I think we will be ok at centre next year.

It doesn't matter either way to me, if he's ready he's ready. I predict he comes in like Monahan and gives management no choice but to keep him up though. He wants to play next year, and I think he's got the drive to make it next year.

I don't see it personally. I don't know how effective he is going to be playing his style of game at the NHL level right away. He really needs to put on some size before he can start to become effective against the big guys in the NHL and especially the western conference. I think it does him good to go back and develop another year in the OHL for sure.

I'm not against him going back to junior, but I think the pull up thing makes the kid seem smaller than he really is. I have him listed At 6'0" 178, not exactly puny, especially if he gains 5-10 pounds over the summer. In comparison Money was listed at 6'2 187 ish-- only 9 pounds on 2 extra inches makes them pretty much equal in my books. It all comes down to those 9 games, if he impresses/ shows he can play his game he will stay.

I like the way the flames are going. As always I would like to compare the oilers and the flames 4 years from now.

JG Monahan Porier
Sven Bennet TBD
Janitor Backlund Granlund
TBD Stajan TBD

vs

Hall Hopkins Eberle
Perron Draisitl Yakapov
Moroz Gagne TBD
TBD TBD TBD

I'd say it is pretty even. The oilers have a better top line. But the Flames will have the better depth. Also, the flames have more depth at prospects right now so the third line is going to be pretty damn good.

Regardless this both these teams are playoff contenders.

True, but monahan doesn't play nearly as physical as Bennett is said to. If he wants to play that kind of game against guys in the NHL who are 200+lbs he's going to need to bulk up. I think they give him his few games at the start of the season but ultimately I see him down in the OHL

Even if he impresses it doesn't mean he should stay with the flames, it would be better if he tore up the OHL and played a major role on the WJ team than trying to play his physical style against the big western team. Take schiefle for example, he was great during his first tenure with the jets and everyone was angry when the jets sent him down, a couple years later and look at him now

There's so many question marks with that future Flames roster you listed
I personally wouldn't be putting Jankowski on there as it's a big stretch for him to pan out still....I'll wait until he starts getting the type of hype Johnny G has, and even him isn't a sure thing to translate in the NHL

FOr the Oilers, it's way easier to fill in a bottom 6 than a top 6
