In a nutshell, I think his point is that Ott is an unrealistic possibility right now because his cap hit and length of term would not fit with his vision of this team and its current financial restrictions and roster makeup. If you say, "They should get him becuase I want him but they probably can't," then that's fine, and a good debate. But as far as discussing the process by which he could realistically be acquired is what has people in an uproar. - jmatchett383
I would say the uproar is more about the poster then the content of the post, but that's just me.

Holy crap! I go to lunch and am like wow I missed 10 pages of comments! Something must have happened! Nope - not a dang thing.
Hopes dashed.

Today has been surreal, like some bizarre test of the Internet at its most...weird.
If I've been reading it correctly, the failure to embrace Steve Ott means...something. But I have no damn clue what that would be, exactly

Who knew Steve Ott was relevant enough as a hockey player to merit this level of incessant arguing? |

It's my fault for asking SSB how much he values Ott. |

Is it truly Steve Ott, or is Ott a metaphor for something else that I missed? Is the name "Steve Ott" some kind of passive-aggressive argument trigger, like if someone says "advanced stats" or "Corsi"?
Is that what has happened? When someone says "Steve Ott," they're really saying "we're fighting, so eff you?"

Ott in Philly would be even more of a penalty magnet than he was elsewhere. They really need to get away from this awful culture of leading the league in penalties almost every season. |

Yeah, it's just another line in the sand that we can all tap dance around.
I'd even prefer arguing about Vinny, Grossmann or stats to Ott... at least those have some bearing on the team. Ott is a pipedream. |

They spent games worth of total time killing penalties versus the more disciplined teams in the league. I thought it was quite staggering to actually look at how many more minutes they skate around with 1 less guy on the ice than some of the other teams over the course of a season. |

I say we sign Ott, then trade him to a Cup winner so we can all complain about another former Flyer winning a Cup. |

Oh absolutely. His life is effectively over. He'll be reduced to scurrying about on a message board to banter about hockey every free moment he can. What a sad, sad little existence that will be.

Not sure what the basis is for this. You aren't acquiring Ott for his playmaking or goal scoring prowess. He would be acquired for his checking and defensive ability, as well as his toughgness, and for intangibles such as leadership. I don't see why those dkills would decline rapidly. - MJL
Don't tell me, let me guess: Ott's leadership, checking and defensive ability aren't indicative of the -38 he posted last season -- including a whopping -12 in 23 games in St. Louis, which was one of the best defensive teams in the league -- nor are they reflected in the fact that St. Louis lost in the first round, nor are they a sign of actual player decline, but they're actually the fault of both Buffalo players and St. Louis players not adhering to their gap control and not supporting Steve Ott properly in their systems? |

Don't worry, Vinny will win the Cup next year wherever he does. Unless he ends up staying here of course |

If we trade him, guaranteed hat trick in a 3-2 win in the cup-clincher. |
