With the extra cash go grab another Defenceman off the UFA wire like:
- Robidas, Greene, Orpik, Meszaros or
- Offer sheet a RFA whos luster has warn off (i.e. Ryan Ellis, Tim Erixon, Philip Larsen, Dimitry Kulikov) or
- Worse case....play Granberg or Finn

Interesting but Gleason would be -60 by years end on a top pair.

Here are some moves Nonis and Shanny can easily pull off:

Leafs trade for Mike Richards and Robyn Regeher for Lupul, Damigo, Gunnarson and Kadri.
(LA gets some help on defence with an expiring contract, some help on the wing to replace Penner and in case they can’t resign Gaborik and a future centre Kadri who will fit in as a 2nd or 3rd line guy).

Now having the 1st line centre the Leafs then would flip Phaneuf to Florida for the 1st pick and choose Aaron Ekblad.

Leafs then would flip Holzer, Gardiner and Biggs to Edmonton for Matt Hendricks and the Oilers 1st round pick (3rd overall) and choose Sam Bennett (apparently Doug Gilmour is raving about this kid to the Buds)

Leafs would then trade their 1st round pick (8th overall) and Cody Franson to Vancouver for Alex Edler and a 2nd round pick

The Defence would be:
Edler - Gleason
Ekblad - Regher
Rielly - Boyle (UFA)

Still with: Finn, Granberg, Nilsson, Brennan all still in the system

Forwards would be:
Kessel - Richards - JVR
Conner Brown (OHL/Marlie) - Bozak - Bennett
Clarkson - Bolland (UFA)- Holland
Downie (UFA) - McClement (UFA) - Hendricks

Bolland comes back at 5.25M yr for 4/5 yrs term
Downie and McClement get 1.5M each for 3 yrs term

Leaves the Leafs with 15M+ in cap space to make more deals or go get a player

They (Lombardi and Gaborik's reps) had already come up with an agreed upon framework well before the finals round.

What it DOES mean is that Greene or Mitchell is gone, as well as Fraser's #.
Not to mention Gaborik is not demanding full value , which you gotta love as a Kings fan.
