That's why I am open to trading Brayden Schenn in the right deal for defensive help.

It's not that Schenn isn't or can't be a good NHLer, he is already that. I just feel they can slide Couturier up and get similar offensive production with him not being in such a defense heavy role.

Schenn played sheltered minutes and had 20 goals, 41 points. His possession numbers were not good, even when looking at the numbers when he played without Lecavalier on his line. More worrisome, there were definitely some games where Schenn was a non-factor, just using the eye test. That's not uncommon for a young player, but it did happen.

Couturier scored 13 goal and 39 points, playing a shut down role against top competition and seeing more D-zone starts than anyone else. I really doubt Couturier would be ineffective as a scoring line player next season, and I'm not eager to split him and Read, but I'm very eager to improve the 5 on 5 play.

- Jsaquella

And I agree with you. I'm not all for throwing Schenn away either, but he could bring back a decent return. It's a shame, he could be that other winger for Coots and being young together grow into a very good combo. However, Schenn seems a little more stable at center.

I wouldn't split Read and Couturier. They already have chemistry and it's not like Read doesn't bring offense in his own right. If you want Couturier's offense to develop, leave Read with him who's an offensive player in his own right. I just believe the two need a proper winger to clear space and do all the little things on the ice for the two. As for Simmonds and Voracek playing together on a line, they're both natural Right Wingers.

Just to clarify this is what I was saying:

two unknowns out of three

and i don't know if berube sees raffl as a fourth line player
preseason will be interesting

To me, Ott is more of an unknown than Laughton.

I would rather make the mistake of not having an adequate 4th liner to start the season than grossly overpay for a 4th liner.

Ill take my chances with Laughton and Raffl instead of dolling out a 4 year, $12M contract for Ott.

Just to be clear, Ott was pretty bad last year. There is no guarantee he bounces back to his 2011 form with the Stars.

You're just allowing your mind to run wild. Try reading all of my posts for the last 5 pages. I've already stated that his age might work against him and if he expects to seriously cash in this offseason, he'll automatically price himself out of my favour. Like, seriously go back and read what I've written. On the other hand, we don't know what he'll command anymore then Evgeni Nabokov did when he was demanding 7 million after leaving the Sharks. I'm within the belief that because Ott will be up against Jokinen, Pouliot and Kulemin doesn't work in his favour. We're just going in circles here...

So we need Joel Otto in order to get Brind'amour to produce?
- SuperSchennBros

Not quite sure how that applies to what I posted.

Sure. We can play the line combo game all day but lines get changed all the time.

That's the thing. I think if given a good, long shot at LW, and left there, with consistent linemates, who fit his strengths, Schenn could be a good winger.

Maybe I'm remembering this wrong but I believe we outbid the Rangers for Otto as a big center to take on opposing lines, this way Brind'amour didn't have to check top lines and have a stronger impact 5 on 5. Please correct me if i'm remember this wrong.

It doesn't matter, I'm not Ron Hextall. If the Flyers can come to a reasonable deal, I'll be hapy to have Steve Ott.

I mean no disrespect and this isn't entirely directed at you but I think we should worry less about what we could get for him and be happy we have him. He's not a fully developed player and I'd like to see where his development takes him.

Okay, thank you. In this case, we do not have a Joel Otto to properly and consistently check for us.

I didn't love him on the wing, but maybe with another center...a playmaker with some speed...we'd need to bring that guy in, though
