There's no discrimination agains the player there. The penalty of a 35+ contract is to the team, not the player. If a player retires he doesn't get paid. I honestly don't see what the problem is, or how Pronger is affected by being placed on LTIR. I'm sure he's suffering when getting those big checks in the mail.
- MJL

He has not retired because the Flyers lose the LTIR allowance if he does while still having to absorb the cap hit. If the Flyers did not have to absorb the cap hit due to Pronger being over 35 when he signed the contract, Pronger would have already retired.

Pronger is doing the Flyers a solid by not retiring. The Flyers have to pay him either way. The LTIR allowance gives them a chance to manage the cap.

Not sure he's that effective in the d-zone either... blocks shots, yes, but coverage down low is spotty and he gets out-muscled by just about any forward bigger than Jason Akeson.

I think his main value to the club is with gathering back the puck in the d-zone and making that first solid pass. Outside of that, he's about average as average can get across the board.

I disagree that his coverage down low is spotty. I think he's solid there. He's not a physical player by any means, but he's not a player that get's thrown around. He has solid all around ability. The only thing I wish is that he was more physical. But if he had that in his game, he would've cost even more.

If he retired he wouldn't have got $7 million this past year. Teams do not have to pay players who retire.

That is a HUGE thing with this team though. I'm not saying he's worth $5M, but thats an element this team has been missing for years.
- PhillySportsGuy

Indeed... but like you said, for $30M, you could reasonably be expecting a bit more from the rest of the package.

I'm aware of how LTIR works, and why Pronger hasn't retired. There is no hardship for Pronger here, other then collecting a big paycheck. The only hardship Pronger has, is dealing with PCS. Which has zero to do with any of that.

All things being equal, I would rather have Fayne and Stralman than MacDonald and Grossmann.

I've been reviewing Fayne's numbers and I really like what I see. Any ballpark on salary demands?

Pronger gets paid on the contract whether he retires or not. He signed it after he turned 35. If he was 34 it is a different story.

That's why you reunite MacDonald with 32. Streit can do the heavy lifting against the Lucics' of the world.

Surprising that Honka went at 11 and Fleury is still undrafted.

Can I ask why we are worried what the Flyers pay for players. Its not our money and don't you think they know what the market says about the cost for players better then we do?

Not the kind of guy that attracts a feeding frenzy... $2-3M I'd say.

I can't wait for 4 years from now. There will be several teams who took Sanguinettis instead of a Giroux.

I agree with you that the 35+ plus rule is dumb. It would be interesting to see how both sides would have handled this issue if he was 34 at the time of the contract being signed.

It counts against the cap if he retires, but he would not get paid. This is why Marc Savard has not retired despite starting his contract when he was 33.

So besides the Ott rumour, Ek is reporting we want Nabokov (are we taking everyone from the Islanders?), and he has us as inviting Leino to camp (as what? a water boy?) All kidding aside, Leino might have something left but yeah not particularly interested...
It also seems more and more likely that Emery is gone.

Not sure where you got that I think the 35+ rule is dumb. In my opinion it is not. If the deal was singed when he was 34, I don't think that changes anything. Pronger still wouldn't be retired.

If you are going to pluck guys from any franchise, the Islanders are the perfect team to do so.
