Eric can't re-sign on the spot though. - Lahey
Why not?
You cant sign a new contract starting when the current one ends?
Maybe it's different with rfa's, but nuge did it. |

Might as well make a package for Jordan in there as well, otherwise don't even go after Eric. - Lahey
Both Staals for Gagner + 2 1sts (preferably 2015 + 2016) + 2nd + Marincin/Klefbom + forward prospect
Big price to pay but our centre depth would be crazy |

Nuge signed his when the last year of his contract kicked in. Eric can't sign until next July. |

Eff it then. No dice |

I feel like the double Staal acquisition would put us in a good position to re-sign Eric.
Then at the very least we'd have Jordan if Eric decided that playing with his bro was not worth playing in Edmonton.

Yeah well we definitely don't have the scratch to pay those to (frank)ing deals and improve our defense... |

Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington: The Hurricanes are dangling Eric Staal, and the Oilers may be willing to part with Sam Gagner or Nail Yakupov.
Gagner + 2015 1st + Marincin is a price I'd pay.
Hall Nuge Eberle
Perron Staal Yakupov - ystoil
Geez you always over pay by a mile.
Staal is good but man. 9.25 mill a year this year then 9.5 for next year. No way I give up that much for him. |

But if you can swing Jordan too... there may be incentive. Especially if they realize how much of an improvement they would be here |

Correct. Carolina is bleeding money and wants to shed salary. So we are going to over pay them just for the pleasure of taking that salary off of them? For a guy thats declined and is a UFA in 2 years? Thats a great way to ensure the Oilers are bottom feeders again in a few years. |

Staal is an instant upgrade over Gagner
We have depth on left hand side of D
One first rounder won't kill us
With that trade we would be out of the basement so that pick wouldn't be top 5 IMO
Also, as easy as it is to discount Staal resigning here, we don't know for sure. If he does decide to walk, we'd likely have our 3rd overall pick ready and we move Staal for assets if we aren't in the playoffs.
Eric still put up 61 points it's not like he's Mike Richards playing 4th line minutes |

Speaking of bleeding money anyone hear about SJ? Sounds like Bettman is stepping in to do some business talks for them. Arena needs upgrades and have a poopty tv deal. Maybe they end up like STL(during Pronger era) and make some drastic moves. |

Staal is undoubtedly an upgrade on Gagner. But to give up Marincin and 2015 first on top of that is ludicrous. Even with Staal there is no guarantee we are much better without improving our D and you just gave away our best possession Dman from last season and a young guy still improving at that!
Staal's 61 points for 9.25 mill and giving them that package is pure stupidity.

Yeah they'll get something renegotiated. Only getting 7 mill per year for the next 14 years is ridiculous. They'll figure it out. Who ever signed that original deal should be hung though....lol. |

I can get on board with this but defenseman learning curves are anything but linear. There is no guarantee he continues on that upward trend (I wouldn't bet against him)
I guess we will have to agree to disagree. |

eric's real dollars don't matter to Edmonton.
only his cap hit. which is still a lot. but 8.25 is the only pertinent number to us, not the 9.25.
there's some drawbacks with erics contract and stuff. but I don't see how we can not strongly consider a center of his stature.
we're one of the worst teams in the league.
this isn't a 37 year old trying to cash in on the last couple years of his career that aint gonna do much for us. it's a 29 year old, who despite a down season for him, still has to be considered one of the elite players in the world. |
