Those that sucked and then get good are so defensive . Like we did not suck on purpose ! Like you guys . It does not matter to me why you sucked , if you sucked ! .

We need some big trades that wont affect us getting mcdavid. I think trading ehroff is something that needs to be done at the draft. In return we should get teams top prospect or get back into late first to draft top goalie. If we could package him with someone like grigorenko for third overall to get both sam's.
- hanleyaj

We could also take a overpaid player to help get what we really want.

So... when he is off the team. Does another team take a flier on him or does he head back to Finland?

I would think he is gone. I don't think a team will see value in him, unless he makes league minimum.

Maybe the Islanders would take him on.

Ville Leino joins the isles, puts up 65 points and is the reason why we don't land McDavid with the isles pick. I think i'd shoot myself in the kneecaps if that happened

outstanding blog. most of the previous winners, going back 7 or 8 years, have had elite talent at center and a norris trophy type on defense. i expect the sabres to address the center position with their first pick this year and next year. murray seems to be leaning towards the bigger athlete model that has worked so well out west.
- rover16

I think it helps to have the defensemen in place 1st, then add the forwards, as happened for Chicago. If they'd had Toews and Kane and were waiting on Seabrook and Keith to be the performers they are, I don't think they'd have been as successful yet. Which bodes well for the Sabres, ultimately, since there's some quality talent at varying stages of development, but already in the system. Forwards, especially wingers, are easiet to plug and play.

I meant we could take an overpaid player as part of package to get a higher first round pick or top prospect. Leino is completely different and i think their is no reason to buy him out now. most of our players arent ready to come yet and need to reach floor. So we could stick him in on the third line and get mcdavid next year

Disagree . He is a cancer . You can buy him out without using compliance buyout . Then part of his salary goes against the cap and helps us get to the cap floor.

I hate the term "model" when it comes to this. All of the cup winners brought in elite players at one position or another, usually through the draft but not always. And that's what needs to happen here.

This isn't a knock on the blog, which was very good.

- buffalofan19

Draft is the way to go. And there aren't many top end players who'd want to play in Buffalo. Before Ehrhoff was signed I don't know any other big name signings?

Draft is the way to go. Then once you get those top end talents from a couple of high picks then you add the vets like Williams, Ott etc....

I am curious if anyone thinks Buffalo would go after any of these guys:

Brian Boyle
Legwand
Grabovski
Winnik
Goc
Rupp
Comeau
Parros (I know he'd never go to Buffalo)

If the goal is to sure up the bottom 6, I would like Boyle, Winnik and Goc to be in the mix. I don't know the effectiveness Parros would have, but I've always been a fan of his. 3 out of 4 would blend into the tougher to play against category.

Honestly, none of them intrigue me considering how far away we are.

Kea could end up being our Boyle in a few years.
