I agree with the first part. But this is NOT a weak draft. It could be about on par with the 2007 draft, which ended up churning out 43.6 percent of its selected players dressing in at least one NHL game, with an average 133 GP to date (and remember that these players are all still just 24 or 25, so those average GPs could climb pretty high when all is said and done years from now).

I'm sorry, I should clarify. It's what I see as a weak top-end of the draft. I don't think any of the top-3 in this year's draft would have been able to crack the top-5 in last year's draft (maybe Ekblad).

so youd try to package him for a bigger fish?
- stayinthefnnet

That would be my plan. Who that bigger fish is becomes the question.

I think Trouba is better. Kid's amazing. But like I said, I wouldn't deal Schenn and Coburn for him.
- jmatchett383

trouba or pouliot?

But Bill, would you trade him for Schultz, straight up?
- jmatchett383

That would depend on what else the Flyers could/would do to replace Coburn's defensive responsibilities.

Trouba. He's done it at the NHL level. Pouliot may not make training camp.

i dont think guys in the subban, pietrangelo, doughty, karlsson level will be traded. at all.

then its that next level, which is open for a lot of interpretation.

Trouba for those 2? No, because then you're opening a hole at center. Same way I wouldn't do the other trade, because you have a hole (Nurse is probably back to juniors). In the Gomez deal, the Rangers got better immediately and for the future. So if I go to Winnipeg with those 2, I'd want Trouba and on of Ladd/Wheeler.
- jmatchett383

Your not really opening a hole at center because if you can't move Vinny then he is still your center. You just replace schenn with Vinny.

yeah i think if i could go back, id switch pouliot for trouba too.

that whole first round looks great in retrospect.

I'm saying with the current makeup of the organization. Does Schultz' offense and (anticipated $3M maybe) cap hit outweigh Coburn's overall game?

Don't think teams are much willing to move anybody from that next level, either. Hence, the Flyers having to settle for paying UFA-premiums for ex-Isles dmen, and rolling the dice on Luke Schenn.

That's really the only way I'd be ok moving him. And honestly I'd try to do everything I could to have the "big fish" AND Coburn on the same team.

Opening a hole wasn't the right wording. Moving 2 valuable assets for 1 more valuable asset doesn't interest me, at least on that level. I'd want a second asset coming back.

Never really thought about it until reading a current novel set during the American Revolution. But people died of being tarred and feathered. The tar causes third degree burns wherever it lands. It seems in popular culture we've made it a funny thing. But it was deadly serious at the time.

Back to hockey.

- bodiva88

The John Adams mini-series showed a tar and feathering in historically accurate detail. It did not look pleasant.

Highly recommend that mini-series, fwiw, if you are a history nerd.

i dont necessarily think that is possible, but should that theoretically happen, i think people will all of a sudden fall in love with coburn.

Now, granted, either of them would be nice. Pouliot looks like he could be better than Letang, he just hasn't shown it at that level yet.

Bill or anyone for that matter,

Are they any dmen or forwards that might need a change or maybe are developing enough that might be able tyo be had. Guys like Tinordi in MTL. Is he still scene as future star dman? Olesiak in Dallas? I don't know so asking for help.

People in this city always slam a player for every little bit they can while he's here, and then bemoan all of the success he has on his new team, all while saying, "Well, if he played that way when he was here..."

eh well to me its still largely based on individual preference and ranking as opposed to what that next level is. take a guy like yandle. i think the price would be hefty, but he could be acquired. whereas a guy like OEL could not.

but then again, some would look at yandle as being part of that next level of guys, albeit slightly unbalanced. whereas some guys wouldnt touch yandle at all.

Ok. I can see that. What about something like Trouba and rights to Burmistrov for schenn and coburn

I agree. If a team is willing to move their best defenseman, they'll probably want another coming back, unless they're already relatively stacked on defense (St. Louis, Nashville).

They likely could have gotten Rundblad at the TDL last year, and I'm not sure where he fits in Chicago's plans.

Again, a guy like Bogo might be in play, but the price may be too steep.

Something like that, sure.

The only reason I say this is because of your "desperate" stance, where you're only dealing with them in you're basically raping them.

i just mean because so much of the pressure would be off of him. coburn is a good and balanced player. just not a number one. if you brought in that number one, with coburn still on the team, i think he would be awesome getting to share the burden a little bit.
