Interesting thought raised on twitter. Josh Rimer said that Vinny might waive to go to the Panthers. Does anyone agree to a Lecavalier for Upshall swap?

Pros are losing Vinny's contract not just now, but for the future. Upshall is a capable 3rd liner, with one year left on his deal at $3.5mm.

Cons, first Upshall is still injury prone and isn't a perfect fit. It's also only a gain of $1mm, if Florida is willing to eat the whole Lecavalier contract.

EDIT: Florida may also have no desire to trade for Vinny and might not want to give up a fairly cheap, serviceable guy in Upshall because of the cap floor

- Jsaquella

In a heartbeat. I love Vinny, but being able to unload his final 3 years while also shaving off 1 mil this year and receiving a serviceable replacement in Upshall (when he's on the ice) makes it a no-brainer for me. If this is the best offer, I could definitely live with it cuz I view it as Vinny for Upshall and future cap space which I def put a hefty price tag on.

Does Lecavalier agree to waive his NMC to go to Edmonton? If you want assets, trade Vinny for picks. Trade Grossmann for picks. Stop trading picks for depth guys like Grossmann, Kubina and MacDonald.
- Jsaquella

MacDonald is not a depth defenseman. He is a top 4 defenseman who can play 20 minutes a game, and in all situations. Including the PP and the PK. Is that the definition of a depth guy? It's not my definition of a depth guy.

Upshall has a modified NTC. Not sure what the details are on that. But if they could trade Lecavalier for Upshall. The Flyers could then try and move Upshall somewhere. With less years on his deal, maybe they find a taker for Upshall and clear all the Cap space.

Good thing I wasn't here at the time of the response because I'd love to get picky. 29 isn't old, especially for a defenseman. Yes, I'm aware that Jsaq was suggesting Grossmann is older but the point is still moot because Grossmann should be within his prime right now. Having an opinion on whether or not you'd like to move a player is fine but using age for a 29 year old defenseman shouldn't be one of them. Moving Coburn right now would be crippling to this club right now, also 29. As shown last season, Schenn might be younger but Grossmann aside from January has shown he's miles ahead of Schenn. Regardless of who's older, Grossmann is easily the better player right now. I'm not dividing based on age, if at all. I've been saying for weeks that the defense is way too fragile and we don't even have an official 6/7 defenseman right now.

It's cute that you came to his rescue though. Don't you love it when people beat up on you when you're not around to defend yourself

he used age and injury as reasons. schenn is younger and more durable than grossmann. neither is anything special.

If Vinny would be ok going to Florida and Florida was willing to deal I would ask for Kulikov first. I thought i read he wasn't happy in Florida and even threaten to pull the KHL card. I have to try and find the report. He is an RFA and with all the young players maybe Florida moves him instead of trying to pay him. If thats a non-starter i wouldn't be against trying to get Brad Boyes or maybe even Tomas Fleichmann. Boyes has a 2.6 mil cap hit for two years but he is good on shootouts and good depth guy. Fleishmann has shown some good offensive skills like his first year in florida and some in Colorado and Washington. His cap hit is 4.12mill but only one more year.

I am with you. Luke was the best Dman in the playoffs. I admit he played a lot better than I thought he would. Grossman is just so slow and he should be more physical.

Grossmann is very physical. He was 15th in hits among all NHL defenseman last season.

I put him right there with some of the top 4 defenseman on some of those teams. Such as Boychuk or Oduya. And I disagree that he is only a top 4 defenseman on teams with crappy D. I don't consider the Flyers D a crappy D.

I agree. Our D is not crappy it just lacks top end talent. unfortunatley unless you get lucky and find one in the draft or get a Chara where they are late developing then you have to try and put together collection of dmen that have roles. Yes the Flyers D is not perfect but I think far from crappy. Also a lot can be helped when the forwards are commited to team d instead of flying out of the zone quickly or not backchecking.

I rank the Flyers current defensemen in this order:

1. Brayden Coburn
2. Kimmo Timonen
3. Mark Streit
4. Andrew MacDonald
5. Luke Schenn
6. Niklas Grossman

Schenn and MacDonald are very close in order though they do different things.

So thinking about yesterday and possibly Vinny ok with going to FLA would you guys be ok with a swap like this:

TO FLA:
Vinny

TO PHI:
Tomas Fleishmann
Dan Ellis

We get a winger who has had success but could use a change. Also only has one year on deal. In Ellis we get a back up goalie at 900k. Money is allabout the same. FLA gets vinny who can help take pressure of yungsters and probably play a good amount of minutes.

I would rather just do Vinny for Fleischman straight up and eat some of Vinny's cap hit given his term is much longer.

We can sign a goalie better than Dan Ellis for the same money.
