Gaborik is 32, not very productive the past couple of years (although certainly a good tournament), probably exiting his prime.

Yet we expect our young studs - only 26, entering their prime - to give up $1-2MM per year for 8 years as a home-town discount.

- StLBravesFan

Not a subscriber to the Toews/Kane discount theory. Hope it happens but Brisson does have other clients and the NHLPA to please.

Those are good points on Gaborik. There are just as many counter arguments though. Exiting his prime/could be his last contract. The Weiss deal in Detroit after down years in FL. Hitting the open market can pay big. Taxes in CA. Leaving $6-10m or so on the table in your last deal is a very tough decision. Easier to do when your 26 and looking at serious ad money as a contender.

Gaborik has made $65m in the NHL. Sounds like he stays in LA.... hope he is in Daryl's dog house by mid next year making $6m plus.

Who cares? He wilts under pressure (2010 WCF is a good example), is a piss poor leader and had zero impact on a Kings 1st round comeback this season. The 'Hawks can spend their money more wisely.

He might be significantly better not being number one or wearing the C with the pressure off or he could be like his best buddy Rick Nash. Wilson will never eat any salary so the idea of the deal is DOA.

Nice bump up for the Hawks prospect system in Hockey's Future. Now number 4 up from 11 (I think) last year. Not really the best indicator but nice to see.

Heard that from you're "sources" I assume lol

no...I don't have any inside sources. That seems to be the package most fans are putting out there on various boards. The returns on players traded in the last year is similar.

Better talk to Benning first.... We take on $7.5 plus in cap hit and you get Shaw at $2m... Seriously?

You're Mike Gillis, right?

Oduya and a pick/ prospect for Smith and Greening?

Sharp to Philly for B. Schenn and a pick (2nd?)/prospect

Pick/Prospect from Philly to Bolts for Purcell?

Just guessing, that is why Stan is paid the big bucks

- ikeane

Yeah those are some good trades. Unfortunately knowing the Hawks it will be just a minor tweak for an older vet that is slowing down and we just give up a 7th. This team doesn't need much, but I think they can set themselves up for the present AND future with a couple of trades. And yes one does involve Sharp

Why change much?...Their young dmen arte getting better and so are their young forwards.

Speaking only to their D group.

Voyanov looked like he regressed this year. I'll bet they regret his contract. Martinez had some timely goals (I'd say!) but he wasn't good in his own end. Muzzin has really developed. Mitchell and Greene were getting away with so much holding and interference it was sick. Those were their keys.

McNaab could be a good one. Otherwise, if Green and Mitchell go then they may need help there. They have cap space though and if Martin Jones shows more promise in goal they could move him for something solid.

Not a fan of trading Johnny O. Can't see how they replace him and still maintain their defensive strength.

Dahlbeck sounds like the second coming of Hjalmarsson. Leddy playing next to Hammer may stabilize him. Then you sign at least one vet d-man for the 3rd pairing.

So you trade the D guy who has been rock solid, and played against one of the highest quality of opponents in the entire league to hope and stabilize a young player that has yet to show anywhere near his potential, and bring up an entirely unproven d man too?

no thank you.

I'm sure Dahlbeck has a lot of potential but that's all it is right now. I can't see Leddy making that big of leap to be solid second pair with hammer. Could happen but I'm skeptical. Hawks D seemed to slip a little this year and trading J.O. Is not going to make that better. Unless Stan has a plan to upgrade Brookbank/Rosy, I see this as a big problem.

Went on the Flames thread. They said "According to Bruce Garioch and theScore, the Flames have offered Mikael Backlund, Jiri Hudler, defenseman Dennis Wideman (and) draft picks for the potential to acquire Spezza's services"

Told them if they want to replace vets after that deal, they could have Roszival and Versteeg. One guy replied "We'll give you Westgarth and calgary stampede tickets for Versteeg"

Westgarth is a UFA, big goon, and the tickets can be scalped on EBay to help pay the "Jonathan Kane" payraises

Done IMO!
