Normally, I agree with that -- you sometimes have to pay for what you need, and you can't be scared to do so.

With the Flyers right now...to me, it equates to deficit spending. We don't have the depth to be doing deals where we are giving up three, four assets for one piece -- unless it is for a player with so few question marks, it is a no-brainier.

Phaneuf isn't that piece, to me

- AllInForFlyers

I would do

Phaneuf + 2nd

For b schenn, grossman, 1st.

That would be about as far as I go

Yeah man they really got their ass handed to them in that 7 game series, eh?

You know...the same series where our starting goalie missed the first 3 games.

Love it when you talk dirty.

The rangers would win 9 out of 10 times if they played again. Geez rangers were a different team when they got Kreider back too. Flyers were lucky to get it to 7

it was laughable to read all the rags fans crying about the officiating in the scf. they STILL got away with murder in that series. the officials were basically there to make sure nobody died. and give the rangers several OT pps throughout. (frank)ing joke.

Possession might not tell the whole story, but neither does bringing up one instance of Timonen getting beat for a goal.

The Flyers gave up 9 goals while MacDonald was on ice, they gave up 6 when Timonen was. Nobody is saying Kimmo is great, but he was Flyers best Dman last season

- Jsaquella

Goals scored for or against, are infinitely more important then possession stats. And tell far more of the story.

I could see Boyle, because he moves pretty well for a big man, is good on faceoffs and has good defensive ability. He'd be a significant piece/upgrade to the fourth line. He shouldn't cost a huge amount -- not free, but affordable.

With Phaneuf...he is a flawed player, but he is also deployed for too many minutes. I don't hate him as much as some, but seriously...how in the hell could that deal get done? You'd have to be moving someone like MacDonald back, because Phaneuf's cap hit is $7 million -- not only are you giving up assets, and cap space, but you are also blocking a roster spot for a young player for years to come.

Phaneuf is exactly the kind of deal the Flyers should avoid, IMO

- AllInForFlyers

I'm not advocating acquiring Phaneuf. But doing so in no way blocks a roster spot for years to come, for a younger player.

No problem here with getting Phaneuf at the right cost.

But doing so absolutely means no more of this 3.5 million for 3rd pairing guys though. Have to start giving guys in the system a chance.

Not true. A dman getting hung out to dry in a two on one by a bad pass from a forward is not the same a dman turning the puck over to give the other team a breakaway.

Sure it does; not his deal alone, but I didn't think I had to say that acquiring a player like that when you have other players on long-term deals means that there are fewer roster slots for young players without a corresponding move.

I can see both. Phaneuf gets maligned, but he's still a good player. Boyle is a decent depth guy to buy time for the kids...depends heavily on cost in both cases
- Jsaquella

It should be noted Ek mentioned Brian Boyle, not Dan.

This situation has zero to do with what I said. All that is describing how a goal is scored, or who is the culprit for it. Still a goal scored against.

A roster is constantly evolving. If one of the young players develops, there is always the option to trade a player to make room. It's done all the time in the NHL.

Yes to Perlini & or Virtanen

But that being said not sure either are likely to make it to the Flyers

Yes, true -- but again, there are limits to player movement, especially when you are capped out or when you are trying to move older, high-salaried players.

Yes, in theory, you can say, "Hey, 33-year-old Dion Phaneuf's been surpassed by Young Player X, and we'd like to move him along. Anybody wanting the last three years of Phaneuf at $7 per? Anybody? Bueller?"

Rosters do evolve. But they evolve far more slowly than they should when you weigh it down with flawed players on very expensive, long-term deals.

Vincent Lecavalier is an example of this.

knowing next to nothing about the kid, I thought that Josh Ho Sang would be a great pick for the flyers, I just looked him up and his skills would mesh disgustingly well with g and jake. I mean, I don't know sh*t and have no hand in the flyers draft, but I can see really big things for the kid with the right linemates.

I'm not so sure they'll be looking at him that hard. Berube did a Q & A last month and went very hard on the first line, saying Jake and G need to be more physical and secondly (and this where he really laid in) he was very disappointed with puck possession along the boards with the 1st line all year. I know Hexy has the final say but it sounds like Berube would really like a big guy that can power people off the puck in that LW role.

A second line of Ho Sang-Schenn-Simmonds would look very nice but I think they're looking to address that top line LW spot right now.

So did any of you guys catch the Hawks blog? Their fans are suggesting a Sharp for BSchenn+ trade.

Thats interesting. It'd be a pain to find the cap room but still, interesting.

Their blogger has Odouya being available via trade as well. Wouldn't mind swapping him in for Grossmann to be honest.

Bob McKenzie says Colorado has filed for arbitration with Ryan O'Reilly. In past this was done to prevent an offer sheet...but under new CBA teams can still sign him ti a OS. Interesting tactic by Avs, could piss him off & make him hard to sign
