IF phaneuf is actually going to edmonton, gagner is definitely going back. oilers aren't taking that heavy contract without moving one of their larger ones.

realistically, phaneuf is still worth more than gagner, so edmonton needs to add.
they clearly won't trade any of their current core guys, so really the only thing that makes sense is that 3rd overall.

gagner + 3rd overall

phaneuf + 8th overall


maybe some prospects could be added on either side to even it up, but i think those will be the main pieces involved. leafs will draft bennet/reinhart, oilers can draft ritchie/virtanen.

still, very unlikely it happens. i think oilers would rather trade up with florida to draft ekblad, although that would cost them much more.

If the trade was Gagner and the 3rd for Phaneuf and the 8th, I would consider that a terrible trade from the Leafs perspective. Essentiall you're trading a #1 defenseman to move up 5 spots to draft a guy who isn't a blue chip sure thing star.

I think Nonis would be fired before that trade was made official and it would be canceled. If I am the Leafs, I want nothing to do with Gagner.

EDM's guaranteed one of Reinhart/Bennett/Draisaitl hell Ekblad at 3. Why would they piss that away for Phaneuf of all D?

Phaneuf is not the best option. Ehrhoff would be a better option if only for his cap hit. Campbell could even be better given the fact that he only has another few years on his deal.

I agree, Oilers management realize they need to be bold but that doesn't mean being stupid. I think there is a trade to be done in this case. I have no clue what it is, we can only speculate for fun.

I actually think if the Oilers do trade for Dion, a lot of their fans will say they made a ridiculous overpayment because the fact is there is no player in the NHL with a bigger discrepancy between what hockey people think of him and what fans think of him than Dion Phaneuf.

It costs a lot for a top pairing defensmen. They aren't easy to get. The Oilers obviously want him bad. So they have to overpay to get him.

I'm thinking it would be a terrible trade for the Oilers, not the Leafs.

That being said, Toronto doesn't need a #2 centre at this point. If the Leafs take back Gagner, clearly they are desperate to get rid of Dion because clearly this deal doesn't do anything to address current areas of concern.
