What will the Oil give up? I may be the only Leaf fan who thinks Phanuef is a good D but has no to play with, so I hate him gone for nothing. A 20+ min a game guy who plays against top players is tough to replace. I think we need Eberle back or the 3rd overall pick. Even if we have to include other picks/players with Dion. I just hope their is a plan to replace him, cuz making Reilly our best D now is not something I look forward to as a Leaf fan

EDM: Gagner, Marincin, 2015 1st
TOR: Phaneuf (retain 1.5mm), 2014 8th overall

I would (frank)ing hoping EDM has no hopes of being as bad as they were this year (aka in the McDavid/Eichel sweeps). That team is way too loaded to continually perform this poorly. So yes, you risk that 2015 but nothing comes without risk. Dion shores up the backend and is a decent contract at 5.5mm, EDM keeps their 3rd + adds the 8th (draft a ritchie or Fleury depending on preference).

Toronto gets a good prospect in Marincin, a solid 40pt player who should only get better at the prime age of 24, and a shot at the McDavid sweeps which everybody wants.

the dion hate has gotten way outta hand.
any oiler fan who says he wouldn't greatly help our joke of a defence is on drugs imo. he's a solid #2 and a true top pairing guy. we don't have one of those.
and couple that with how rare top pairing guys get made available.

niskanen might get 6 mil for eff sakes. stralman might get 4+.


but I will say his contract is a minus and tough to swallow for 7 years. this is a negative for sure.

and there is zero chance the oilers are giving up their bluechip best defensive prospect in nurse for any dman not named weber or doughty etc.

It's gotta be Klefbom or Marincin. I thought Oilers fans valued Klef more than marincin. Pick your posion, swapping that player out for Gernat is bullpoop deal for Leafs tho. Reality is, no deal should be an obvious win for one side. I think it's a balanced deal with risk-reward on both sides.
