My opinion on fair trade for both sides:
EDM: Gagner, Marincin, 2015 1st
TOR: Phaneuf (retain 1.5mm), 2014 8th overall
I would (frank)ing hoping EDM has no hopes of being as bad as they were this year (aka in the McDavid/Eichel sweeps). That team is way too loaded to continually perform this poorly. So yes, you risk that 2015 but nothing comes without risk. Dion shores up the backend and is a decent contract at 5.5mm, EDM keeps their 3rd + adds the 8th (draft a ritchie or Fleury depending on preference).
Toronto gets a good prospect in Marincin, a solid 40pt player who should only get better at the prime age of 24, and a shot at the McDavid sweeps which everybody wants.

Marincin is not a prospect anymore. Only have a season but he showed EXTREMLY well and is literally our best young defenseman and if you follow advanced stats just our best D-man pure and simple.
No way you give up a guy who's advanced stats crush Phanuefs. Sure Phaneuf will get more points but I put Marincin's D already faaaaar ahead of Phanuefs.
Change out Marincin with Gernat, Simpson, or Musil and we... Wait wait wait... Our 2015 1st overall? The best draft to happen in this lifetime and the only real improvement on our team being Phanuef...
So Marincin (advanced stats already better than Phanuef) Gagner (solid ppg rate second liner but terrible defensively) and our 1st overall 2015 pick, aka McDavid??? For Phanuef... and this years 8th. Wow.
