"Available" is a pretty key part of his point.
Dions contract makes him cheaper in a trade. Getting anybody better will cost the oil much more.
And no team is looking to trade anybody better than Dion. - Big_Lightnin
Wait. Are you saying that his contract is a good thing?
It is supposed to bring the asking price down in a trade?
Then why expect the Oilers #3 in a trade. Or Nurse. Or Eberle.
The contact is bad. It is not a blessing. No matter the team it will be tough to take on.

Its ridiculous to think that a team that had good goaltending all year and gave up 20 plus more goals than any of the playoff teams would even consider giving up their best defenseman. The only way Phaneuf would get traded to Edmonton would be if Toronto was keeping some of the salary. There is no way they would be bringing him in as the highest paid player and upsetting their salary structure. Former Flames are never well received in Oil Country either. When the Leaf's panicked and gave Phaneuf a contract comparable to Drew Doughty, they totally diminished his trade value. But to play along, Phaneuf plus Clarkson to Edmonton for Gagner and the Oilers use their last compliance buyout on Clarkson to rid the Leafs of a horrendous contract. - Woowy
Huh.
First off the compliance idea doesn't work, Clarkson signed his contract after the strike ended and I am fairly certain those special buyouts are for contracts signed before.
Second. If the compliance thing could work then Edm couldn't sign Clarkson since they just bought him out. And MacT apparently wanted to sign him before, and would probably stil like to get him on the team.
Third. Edm should deal with $13+M of TML disaster contracts while sending only <5M back? Doesn't sound like a good deal fiscally. |

I dont think most people realize Dion still has a solid 7-8 years left in him. The guy only just turned 29. - GardinerExpress
Yeah I think I said that in the post before. Dion has his best years in front of him. He will easily play another decade and 7-8 years of good play should be expected from a guy that started as good as he did. I think he is in the prime of his life and I think a change of scenery might be just what he needs. Out of the spot light in TO and able to play his game like he did in Calgary. Plus I think he would be great paired with Schultz who has a huge offensive game. They could feed off each other and Schultz could use that type of mentor. Maybe get some physical play out of him. |

As much as everyone is joking about how ridiculous some of these trade proposals for Phaneuf are, they all kind of suck for the Leafs too. There's a reason he got 7mil a season, and thats because the Leafs couldn't afford to deal with losing him on the backend. So ya something like "Nurse + 3rd overall for Phaneuf + 8th overall" is pretty brutal for the Edmonton, but it also creates that hole on the Leafs blue line that they overpaid to avoid. |

I don't see the picks in play. Not this years. I could see next years first and Petry. Our best two way guy who is an RFA this year. I don't see the oil giving up on the top 3 when they are in bad need on a second line center. However you are right. They need to fill the hole and i don't think salary is going to deter them. |

I'd trade for the Oilers 2015 first in a heartbeat. That's a shot at McDavid. |

Anyone outside the playoffs with this new lottery system.....
Two guaranteed tickets in that 14 ticket lottery, I'd be down for that. |

Id strongly consider dealing next years first.
Our fanbase needs to stop looking for the next awesome saviour prospect.
We cant trade that pick! What if it becomes crosby and the proven nhl'er
only helps us marginally!!?
They want those for sure, one sided total steal trades.
Just need to find a gm willing to do that for us |
