Lots of people hate on Phaneuf. I'm not typically one of those guys. But yes 7 years and 7 mill is a lot. He is a solid #2/3 under the right conditions. I would take him with salary retained for the rest of the contract, say 1.25 retained.

But any deal with Phaneuf likely sends Gagner back. I can't see any 1st rounders being exchanged or any of our top prospects like klef/nurse/marincin

Only way Oilers would trade for Phanuef is for Gagner. They would be absolutely crazy to trade anything else.

Leafs move their bad contract ,Oilers move theirs.

Anything else is nonsense and will not happen

I doubt the Leafs would make a deal with the Oilers involving Phaneuf if one of those assets wasn't coming back. You have to give to get, and contrary to what you hear from disgruntled Leaf fans, and Leaf haters, Dion is far from a salary dump.
