In a weak draft year he definitely is worth it the top picks are suppose to be gd 2c players and ekblad has been compared with a Chris phillips type player. So yes dion is worth a top 5 easy.

Button is a goof. He said this draft didn't have star power but compared Reinhart to Sakic and Yzerman.

So by sending Phaneuf, toronto will want to either pick 3rd and 8th therefore you mean Phaneuf for 3rd overall? or Yakupov, so Yakupov for Phaneuf?

Go see if Florida will trade Huberdeau or 1st overall for Phaneuf. They are desperate to improve too. I bet they say no.

My opinion on fair trade for both sides:

EDM: Gagner, Marincin, 2015 1st
TOR: Phaneuf (retain 1.5mm), 2014 8th overall

I would (frank)ing hoping EDM has no hopes of being as bad as they were this year (aka in the McDavid/Eichel sweeps). That team is way too loaded to continually perform this poorly. So yes, you risk that 2015 but nothing comes without risk. Dion shores up the backend and is a decent contract at 5.5mm, EDM keeps their 3rd + adds the 8th (draft a ritchie or Fleury depending on preference).

Toronto gets a good prospect in Marincin, a solid 40pt player who should only get better at the prime age of 24, and a shot at the McDavid sweeps which everybody wants.
