I seriously doubt that Mike Richards doesn't work out. - MJL
I saw Meszaros at skatezone around this time last year and he had a legit gut. I wouldn't say that so confidently. |

And probably 160 when they draft him. Bruins allegedly didn't even want to take him. - Tomahawk
They didn't want to take him. Their first choice was Keith Brown. But Chicago took him the pick before. And Boston was pissed. They reluctantly took Bourque.

How far did he get?

So Meszaros having a gut, means that Mike Richards doesn't work out? Do you think Meszaros having a serious Achillies injury may have prevented him from working out at any point like he wanted to?

Comeau is the only name that perks my interest -- solid numbers despite tough usage, can play both wings and can play up and down the lineup. |

Keith Brown was the bigger guy, with all things being equal, so that kind of underscores what PLind was talking about.
Sometimes arbitrary tie-breakers/biases that make sense on the surface can really be pitfalls in disguise.
I love me a smaller/slower/questionmark player with a world of skill that other teams might be undervaluing -- that's how we got Claude. |

Looking at that market, I like that Hextall made a move to sign a European. Pedobear may end up being a much better value than any of these guys. Wouldn't mind if Homer went that route again along with a Kulemin signing. |

I don't think anyone said that the bigger guy will always turn out to be the better player all things equal. |

Yep, viewing size as a "skill" seems to hurt more organizations than it helps. |

Plind's only point was to try and undermine my point. With a bad example. It did not do so. Drafting is not an exact science. And there's a lot of luck involved. My premise was not about choosing a player that other teams undervalue. My premise was having a choice between two players, that I felt were equal as players and in skill. In that situation, I would lean towards the bigger player, if there was a significant difference in size between the two players.

All I said was dont say so confidently players don't work out, because I know many myself that don't do much independently to stay in top form.
Athletes are individuals, and people can be lazy. I know Mike Richards is lazy. But for every 1 Mike Richards, there's 10 Coburns. Coburn is the complete opposite, and is a nutrition and fitness freak.
But I know for a fact there's players throughout professional sports that don't work as hard, simply because they don't have to. |

I know this is hockeybuzz, but Im actually good friends with the Deangelo family. My friend dates Anthony's older sister, and my cousin has actually been training him all summer at Endeavor sports in Pitman, NJ.
This is a GREAT kid. All that off ice nonsense is a non issue. This kid has his head on straight, and has a great family supporting his dream to the fullest.
Also, Ants supposedly a little closer to 175-180lbs already. My cousin is about 5'10-5'11 and he says Ant has at least an inch on him. The few times I've met him, he's looked bigger than any measurements I've seen for him online.
His dad is a HUGE man. I don't think size will be a concern with this kid. Definitely looks like he has a frame to grow into, just needs time. - mochoson
Bump. Figured some might be interested in reading this.

Obviously there is going to be difference's in how players workout. That's common sense. I'd like to know specifically which players you know don't work as hard, and how you know them. And I'd also like to know how you know that Mike Richards is lazy?

Yeah, I'm still on the Kulemin train, too.
Let's hope Pedobear can be at least as good as Thoreson/Pyorala, and hopefully that knocks R+R out of the lineup for good. Maybe that get Sekac, too and have two F spots sewed up for under $1.5M.

I would hope he is much better then those two as an NHL player. Otherwise the signing is a bust.

I think those two are difficult to quantify and assess, but I'd rather try to figure that out than care about a player's size.
If evaluators want to discuss his physique or frame or BMI, fine.
But I think taking a guy who is bigger (all other things equal, hypothetically) is actually the wrong course of action. If there's a guy who can do things on the ice at that age level as well as a guy three inches and 30 lbs. bigger than him, I want the smaller guy. He's likely much more talented.
Same goes for Sam Reinhart and his lack of being able to do a pull-up at the Combine. If he can do all of those things on the ice against top competition without being strong enough to do a pull-up, wait until he gains that strength. He'll likely do even greater things. |
