There is talk of the Cap going up another 6M after this season. Carrying a 2M overage is one third of that. Don't think that could hinder the Flyers ability to add a top defenseman if it's available? A player on an ELC is not going to replace Timonen.

Probably about the same. Here's the deal as I see with the Timonen signing. Love that he's back. Flyers are certainly a better team with him, then without him. But the contract while not bad, is certainly not great.
An example is the Boston Bruins. Fans probably loved it when they signed Jerome Iginla last off season. What a deal they probably felt. Well now the Bruins got knocked out, and fell short. And there's going to be a 3.5-4M bonus overage that the Bruins are going to have to carry on the Cap.
Now a bonus overage for Timonen is not a guarantee. But the odds of it are high. So the question is, should a team that is probably not a legitimate contender, be risking a fairly large bonus overage, to bring back Timonen? I think an argument can be made for no to that.

I get that I really do but as you stated the Flyers are a better team with him than without him. Plus add in the the invaluable on-ice mentorship for the young D prospects in the system in preseason or if any should make the team anytime during the season. If taking a potential 2 mil cap hit next season is what it takes to get him back on a one year deal at 4 million less than I think it's more than worth it. Plus who knows what the salary cap will be next year. Like a said earlier we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

I don't think an ELC replaces kimo the player. That's silly.
but, you hope that someone already on the roster takes a step forward and the ELC replaces that player.
that said, based on the contract value, I would think that replacing kimo on the ice isn't as hard because they aren't expecting as much from him now.
