Well you've clearly set your mind on that so I wont continue to debate whether or not that its not their only option. I personally think they can build a strong team around Weber in a few years time if they make the right move with Jones and draft accordingly. I'll just leave it at that.
- hereticpride

There's no way that they build a strong team around Weber mainly by using the draft in the next two seasons. It takes much longer then that. And like I said previously, they'd have to get established NHL top forwards for Jones. Not sure I see that happening. Maybe one forward of that ilk, plus prospects and or picks. But not multiple.

@Hope_Smoke: McKenzie "the Sabres are willing to buy first round picks by taking on big salary and then giving that player a compliance buyout"

So Bob says the Sabres will "sell" CBOs for 1st rounders, eh?

No, I didnt mean they're going to get a package of say JVR and Kadri or anything like that but some young forwards that wouldnt take nearly as long to develop as a young D man would. Players somewhere along the developmental lines of where Simmonds and Schenn were at at the time they were traded as an example.
- hereticpride

Well Simmonds and Schenn weren't in the same place developmentally when they were traded. And we're still waiting for the most part with Schenn. And he was traded for how long ago?

Cant do that. CBO has come from the team that gave the contract as far as I understand.

No they definitely had knowledge of the game, but they announced it JUST LIKE soccer. Last name heavy, with little cute quips in between

Fair enough. Just with the rediculous price tag that come with D men I think they could get themselves on the right track with a move and a smart choice with their high first rounder this year.

Like I said, It still doesnt make much sense to me why they didnt make a move when Jones fell to them at 4.

I'd ship out Brayden Schenn for Josi.
- MJL

So would I. I think that'd be a fair trade for both sides.

I don't believe that is the case.

The owner has money to burn, I guess.

They may have tried. I'm sure there were a number of teams looking to jump up to #4 when Jones fell that far. I have to believe Edmonton was very interested and had a lot to offer

They just may not have gotten a strong enough offer.

Strange. I could have sworn this came up in discussion last offseason and it was clearly prohibited. Perhaps I'm thinking of contracts signed after the lockout.

I apologize if I'm coming off unreasonable. I absolutely see your side. I just feel it's as important for the D to grow along with the forwards as awhole. Nashville does have Josi, Jones and Ellis on D. Rinne in net. Forsberg coming at forward. Trading Weber for skilled forwards should be the easy part.

I guess having Bill O'Brien leave opened up some funds for him.

If I recall correctly they didn't seem to waste much time going up to the podium when they were on the clock. Perhaps they already knew Jones was going to fall though.

Yeah, deals signed under current CBA can't be CBO'd

Okay, I think someone was suggesting trading a newly signed player elsewhere to be CBO'd. Thanks for straightening me out.

@Hope_Smoke: Bob said Sabres would acquire a 1st rounder & a player that was on a big deal & trade back a lesser pick (2nd rounder) & then buy out player

There was a situation where the NHL nixed a deal...TB was going to trade Vinny to Toronto, Leafs would then buy him out & Bolts could re-sign him for lesser hit.

Maybe you're thinking of the Vinny -> Toronto CBO -> back to TB thing?
