Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Bellemare Signed, Couturier Surgery, Quick Hits

Good thing is if he doesn't stick, Bellemare's deal is small enough to bury without any cap hit staying

Exactly, though I'm pretty confident he can at least be a solid upgrade for the 4th line. Assuming they move VL, I'd be happy with the following lines:

Hartnell-G-Read or Voracek
Jokinen-Schenn-Voracek or Simmonds
Raffl or Belle-Coots-Simmonds or Read
Raffl or Belle-Laughton-Akeson or Rinaldo

If we can move VL, that should easily free up the $$ needed to sign Jokinen, and who knows, maybe they'd actually win a few shootouts and add a couple points to their total.

Jokinen's seemed to have lost his touch in the SO... 7/26 (26%) since '10.

Bill, thanks so much for the write up! It's always good to know something about who is coming on board and your reviews I trust.
Sounds like this guy was a good signing. I can't wait for Jackson to butcher his name. I want a nice Parisian accent on it
Maybe it's just me but it feels like Hextall is going to stand true and not rush any prospects into the NHL.

The fiery Esche ended up becoming the Flyers starting goaltender during the team's run to Game 7 of the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals.

I always liked Silent Bob.

And let's hope this Euro signing is as good as the Raffl signing.

I like JJ (probably more than most in this forum), but the king of correct and proper pronunciations of European names was and will always be Mr. Gene Hart.

I'd personally much rather use that money to sign a defenseman. I would go after Stralman if the price isn't too outrageous. Then they would add the possibility of moving Grossmann. The Flyers would lose some physical play and shot blocking, but they would gain some mobility on the back end.

I thought this guy was just a joke the other day. I don't think I'll hear his name and not think "Pedo Bear" during his NHL career, however long that ends up being. Thanks for that one

I would think Bill Maher said fast would be more of a phonetic similarity.

If you read the article though it says he won't be heading over there. That he is waiting to hear from the devils and that he'd have to clear waivers to play overseas which won't happen. I think he's trying to refute the rumor...

Well that's probably still better than most of our squad

I'd rather re-sign Timonen, if possible, for one year, rather than overpay Stralman in a long term deal. From what I've seen, I think Ghost will be ready by 15-16 and most likely Morin by the following year.

Maybe there's something to the whole "don't rush young players' development" thing.

They may be ready, they may not. You have a chance to get a solid top 4 defenseman for a fair price, you have to take it, in my opinion. And signing Stralman doesn't stop Ghostibehere or Morin from developing and making the team. It would also help with not rushing players in their development. A player like Morin is probably a good 5 years away, from playing a top role as a defenseman in the NHL.

I like Stralman. I just fear that with so few quality mobile Dmen available via FA, you will be forced to overpay for whomever you want, and I just don't want to see them do that.

Whoever will come cheaper between Stralman and Tom Gilbert. Both are mobile, top-4 guys with a right-handed shot.

Consolation guy could be Mark Fayne, who is underrated. Good puck-mover and good size.

I'd rather then go the cheaper, older, shorter contract route. Stralman is going to get paid. Even if that player isn't as good
