No. Can't cover with your hand in the crease. Can't close hand over it outside the crease. Because he was pushing the puck into Lundqvist (not gathering it to himself), it was a legal play.
67.4 Penalty Shot - If a defending player, except a goalkeeper, while play is in progress, falls on the puck, holds the puck, picks up the puck, or gathers the puck into his body or hands from the ice in the goal crease area, the play shall be stopped immediately and a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending team. Yes, but bargain shopping for a backup can really screw you if/when the starter goes down. 09/10 was a pure anomaly. A good, capable backup like Emery can usually be had fairly cheap, but it's not a non-iussue.

Emery isn't good anymore. His hips are shot. He got roasted on the powerplay all season long and in the playoffs, and the Flyers are usually the most penalized team in the league.
