The payback is largely unknown. He's basically building a minor hockey palace. The economic impact is a complete question mark because nothing like this has ever been built anywhere.

As far as the ability to sell it, like real estate is concerned, unless he starts getting major rental income from the place, I don't think it's that kind of investment.

I think, respectfully, you answered your own question about whether Pegula is a PR guy or is genuinly interested in the economical and aesthetic growth of Buffalo.

Wonder about the tax write offs...
- ImThatGuy

Unless they pass some new tax law (doubtful, especially in an election year), he's going to have to depreciate the building over 39 years. He'll receive some tax benefit, but he's not going to be able to write the whole thing off at once.

I believe his contract still scares people away. It shouldn't, but I think it does. I have a feeling that if he's traded, we are going to be underwhelmed for the return, and the Sabres probably would end up having received more value in services rendered.
- buffalofan19

I don't think Murray moves him for peanuts. I think if the right deal comes along he makes the deal. I think Detroit and Boston are the two likely destinations.

Actually, it seems like it's you who thinks Vanek will resign there. Do me a favor, leave us out of this boring little game going forward, please.

Downtown is his for the taking . Using your own money makes things happen vs having the politicians argue for years on who will get a pc of they pie IF the approve the financing for something to be built.

It's going to take more people like him: someone willing to spend his own money to make a profit, and someone with enough money to make it happen. Unfortunately, those are few and far between, especially here, where New York State is simply a pain in the ass to do business.

Agreed. I see the bids for construction and usually giggle at how old I will be if it were to be built.

Figured either him or Bennett. Do you think the sabres would take Ekblad if he doesn't go #1? I know you guys have a ton of good D prospects already but it would be hard to pass up on him, no?

I don't expect him to be their top pairing shut down guy, and I don't think the Sabres ever did either. Remember, they gave Myers his deal in the same summer. Ehrhoff ended up being the "top guy" by default simply because Myers became a trainwreck up until last season.
- buffalofan19

They both took turns being train wrecks that 1st season. Ehrhoff and Myers had awful starts to that season. I remember them both ending the season playing incredibly well until both got hurt during our run to 9th.

Ehrhoff played great during a short 48 game season, Myers was bad for the 1st half. Fact is, neither have proven to be a consistent top pairing defensemen and the one is entering his prime, while the other is falling out.

Finding forwards to suit Ehrhoff sounds as silly as finding a center to build around Callahan

I think they'll either take Ekblad or trade out of #2 to be honest, because if he's still available, someone's going to want him.

If Ekblad goes first I am not sure I would trade the pick but just for the discussion I would want 5th overall and Lee maybe

Edit: I need to learn how to read (reid) I want Reinhart

The difference, though, is only one of them was ever expected to be a top pairing defenseman. $4 million per year isn't top defenseman money, never was, and never has been.

It seems that they are most likely going to trade him, so I don't want to dwell on it much more. I just question whether or not it's the right move, and if they can get a return for him remotely worth getting excited about.
