I'd say around 20. It depends on how good you think Coburn is. I think there are about 17 that aren't debatable.
- PhillySportsGuy

The problem is, the legit contenders have at least 2 dmen better, and some even more than that.

Coburn has some strenghts. Great skater, good size (although he plays small sometimes)

My issue with Coburn is he's still inconsistent. He's not a puck mover, he's not a shutdown guy per say, and he doesn't have much offense to his game. I think the only thing he excels at is his skating ability.

Well of course, I mean you really don't think the KINGS had the slightest thing to do with it now?

I wouldn't care if they got swept because of Elmo.

They still got swept and that makes me elated. (frank) em.

Serious looking way ahead question:

In the event that LA buys Richards out, would you take him back at $4M?

- jmatchett383

Hell no. That's too much for a 4th line center.

Elmo sweeping a hockey team took me to a very dark and inappropriate place which I never wish to visit again...

Maybe Hextall can get his Delorean up to 88mph and generate 1.21 jigawatts. He can go back to the year 1973 and snatch Denis Potvin.

Coburn will always be one of those guys that you only notice when they make a mistake. However, if you take him away from last years club, the Flyers don't even sniff the playoffs. He does a solid job both on the PK and in matching up against other teams top lines and he is one of the last guys that the Flyers should be thinking about getting rid of.

I have no issue with Coburn. His contract is fair and his play is fairly strong. He's, without question, a top 4 dman in the NHL. I think he's capable of being the shutdown guy on a top pair. The problem lies with the defense around him. It's not his fault the team is made up of 2nd and 3rd pairing dmen and he's forced out of position.

I remember his poor pass to Hal Gill which resulted in a Ranger goal. Everyone killed him for giving a bad pass.

In reality, 95% of dmen just kick that puck up to their skates.

I think Coburn is similar to Dan Girardi. Girardi is a little better offensively and Coburn is a better skater. If Girardi makes that pass to McDonagh, we wouldn't even notice it was a bad pass.

I agree. Coburn is a keeper. I'd be much more willing to listen to offers on other defensemen.

They let players fall on Lundqvist. Even when they're pushed from behind.

How many teams in the NHL have at least one dman better than Coburn 20+
- PLindbergh31

I'd say he's (at least debatably) better than any defenseman on:

Carolina
Dallas (push with Daley)
Edmonton
Islanders
Devils (push with Greene)
Sharks (push with Vlasic)

That's about all I got.

The refs paid off Lundqvist to let deflected shots beat him.

So saying he's a push with those players, he's better than dmen on 3 of the NHL's bottom feeders. Not nearly good enough.

Maybe Columbus, Florida or Washington. Those guys have bigger point producers, but I don't think they come close to matching COburn's defensive ability.

Do you move Coburn and #17 to the Oil for #3?

Not nearly good enough for what? Coburn is fine for what he is, which is a strong #3 defenseman. The Flyers have exhausted every possible way to land a true top-pairing defenseman, and have devoted the better part of the last 2 drafts towards drafting defensemen, which has given them several prospects with top-pair potential.

I'm really not sure what point you're trying to make that isn't readily apparent.

I'd say John Carlson is better. Florida has Brian Campbell, and Columbus has James Wiesneiuwseuiske, which are debatable I guess.

Nope. Especially not if Ekblad's gone in the top two. But, just no.

Undoubtedly, trading Coburn (except as part of a trade for a top defender) is a poor idea. Even if he isn't a world beater, there's no addition by subtraction in this case.
