Still thinking Canadian Tire is a darkhorse buyer here, they might be just giving EM just enough rope to finish hanging himself
- top shelf 15

This might be an ideal scenario. Since buying Forzani Group (Sport Check, Hockey Experts, etc) in 2011, Canadian Tire is becoming a really good fit as owner. Deep pockets and stability would be appealing to the NHL. The only thing is, all the evidence points to Melnyk keeping the team as long as he can. It is currently his most lucrative revenue stream. He's borrowed against this team so much that it is mired in debt. He would be crazy to sell it at the moment.

The only way I see this happening is if CTC works with the NHL and somehow pushes him out.

Yes I get the 15% above and below the mid point. I think where it may be off is the revenue. Is the cap set off of this years revenue or next years "estimate"?
- Iggysbff

What do you not get?

3.7 Billion * 50% / 30 teams = 62 million

62 million * 1.15 = 71 million (cap ceiling)
62 Million * 0.85 = 52 million (cap floor)

Let's not jump the gun. There are irons in the fire.

Not sure how hot the fire is though.

Yes, I understand. But I have a reputation to maintain as an angry frustrated Senator fan. Everything in my business background tells me this team has never been in better shape. Clearly there is a very strong business agenda being played out.

I am not normally an impatient person. But, I just wish they would get on the next phase where everyone could share in the excitement.

I am ready for another Eagles' concert.

Quick, somebody record a phone conversation of Melnyk being racist.

That seems to be working for the NBA.

It's no secret that he has been searching for a partner for several years. Your spidey senses make sense in that they are, more than ever, an attractive commodity.

The whole Spezza thing is not a financial one. Strictly on ice decision.

I have long believed that Spezza was a negative in respect of the Sens becoming a serious contender. I have really enjoyed him as a player. But time has come to move forward. It would have been insane to commit $12m a year towards Spezza and Hemskyfor the next 5 years.

I believe Murray is too smart to come out of the next few weeks without a strong addition to the team. Murray wants a hard forward. My favorite would be Kane. But there are other options. I think it will be okay, they clearly need to build an entire second line.

On this one I believe your correct. Most NHL revenue is shared revenue in terms of national broadcasting and advertising sponsorship deals. All the teams get the same amount of money from the big pool. The only significant difference is the discretion provided in ticket sales, concessions and local broadcast rights.

So, here is a list of some of the current deals in place in regard to local broadcasting. As you can see all Canadian teams should be spending near the cap.

I understand what Melnyk is doing from a business perspective, it infuriates me as a fan.

1. Montreal Canadiens - $61m
2. Toronto Maple Leafs - $41m/year (Sportsnet, TSN, Leafs TV); through 2014-15.
3. New York Rangers - $35m (MSG Network)
4. Ottawa Senators - $30m ($33m CAD) (TSN/RDS); through 2025-26; (deal starts next season: up from $10/yr)
5. Detroit Red Wings - $30m (Fox Sports Detroit); through 2018-19 or 19-20 (not sure)
6. Vancouver Canucks - $25m (Sportsnet Pacific, Sportsnet One); through 22-23 season
7. New York Islanders - $24m (MSG Network); through 2030-31
8. New Jersey Devils - $24m (MSG Network); through 2024-25
9. Dallas Stars - $20m (Fox Sports Southwest); ends this season
10. Los Angeles Kings - $20m (Fox Sports West); through 23-24
11. Pittsburgh Penguins - $18m (Root Sports); through 28-29

Are you getting that from the Forbes list? Is there a list for all 30 teams anywhere?

So if the floor is set at roughly $52 mil and the Sens seemingly set on trading Spezza, they would be about $11 mil under the floor.

Take into account resigning Lehner, Gryba, and Hoffman and the salary they take on from the trade and it seems like they would need some high profile (cap salary) players just to pass the floor let alone be a mid cap team again.

The next month or so should be crazy!

so the topic of discussion last night on Sportsnet was that the Palat deal (approx. $10M over 3 years) will help set the bar for any pending Hemsky contract.

While it may not be an exact comparison, it can at least be used as a benchmark. Palat is younger and coming off a 59 point rookie season.

Hemsky, 30 and oft-injured, showed great promise for Ottawa, but has not hit 60 points in a few seasons ......

Palat has very little negotiating room coming off a rookie season, whereas Hemsky is going to a potentially volatile FA market.

I'm not sure what Murray offered Hemsky as a starting point for negotiations, but I can only assume that it was less than the $5M he is making now.

Judging by the Palat comparable, Murray might not be far off.

Sure would like to see Hemsky signed to play on Spezza's wing

I agree, Hemsky playing on Spezza's wing with a contender (like Anahiem) that has a two or three year window would probably be a nice double signing (especially with Selanne and Koivu retiring). But Ottawa giving them long term contracts that might hit $12/13m for the two would be crazy.

Interesting, at least, but not really all that comparable. Palat could be awesome, but one season is a pretty small sample size. As such, that looks like a fair deal for both sides.

Hemsky seems to be pretty excited to play with a top centre. His numbers are sure to improve, and I'm confident he is worth $5.5. He should easily get that on open market. He's a shooter that needs a top setup guy.
