In a shortened season, even the leafs can make the playoffs. They were both first round exits anyway.
- Herzeleid

And yet it doesn't take away the fact that they made the playoffs. If someone was thinking it was a lock top 3 next year, that's foolish. Their getting better, and their top prospects are developing.
They will most likely miss the playoffs, but be picking from7-15 range.

And they made the playoffs.

Hey, it could be a lottery pick. I just hope Murray isn't banking on it

- sbroads24

That is why you cannot waste your top pick this year on a defenseman. Cannot bank on two top picks next year.

They still have their GM. I'm going with them sucking again next season.

If he's the best player then it's not really a waste is it?

But they will also have a competent goalie for the entire year
- sbroads24

I almost never agree with you. But I fully do on this. I don't understand how anyone was thinking it was a guaranteed top 3 pick. If that was the case, no one from any fan base would have thought they might have gave us the 5th pick this year.

I mean if it's a guaranteed higher pick than 5 in a deeper draft, why would they be picking this year?

they have picked 7/8 in the top 5 .. 86%

will see what happens does not look too promising for them

You want a 39 year old has been?

- JVince11

Not on this team, but he is still a useful player in the league with experience. If I was a team shooting for the playoffs I would add him for a 5th.

Odds of them making it 8/9 aren't too high either. I'm under the assumption that Snow isn't even close to being done.

Not when we lack top 3 forwards . Defenseman is a lot more likely to not live up to expectations than a forward .

It's not all bad either. If it lives up to the hype, you could still find a high quality player at 10-15 next year.

While this isn't an official scouting site, names like Konecky, Marner and Sprong all stick out in that range as very good players. Considering it's a supplemental pick to our own, I think it's great.

Bruins or Hawks IMO.

He's best served as a 5-7 guy now.

Agree. Which is why I wanted to gamble, cause at 15 next year, I think there is a high chance we get someone just as good of not better than what we would have gotten at 5 this year.

Not a clear cut draft this year though. If the choice comes down to Ekblad or Bennett, you're probably talking about the same amount of risk. Ultimately you go with the guy you think will have a higher ceiling but neither of them is a sure thing.

You always take BPA. It's the reason why you're able to do trades. To flip a strength for a weakness.

If FLA were to take say Bennett 1st. I would attempt to move down to pick 3 or 4 and take the forward available. Then I would try to move to the middle of the 1st.

Assuming say CGY wants Ekblad.

FLA- Bennett
CGY- Ekblad
EDM-Reinhart
BUF- Draisaitl

finagle a way to get Virtanen

It's probably more realistic than I first thought. It would take some prospects moving but I bet TM could swing a deal with Anaheim to land Ottawa's pick and take Virtanen should he be there.

What's better Reinhart/Bennett or Draisaitl + Virtanen. On the surface I'd say the latter no question but it's very high risk with those two.

I just have this feeling Draisaitl is their guy
