Regardless, it's an upgrade for them

Halak is an upgrade in goal
Boyle is an upgrade on the blueline

That team will be a lot better. Been saying it for a while now but we're likely to only have 1 top 10 pick next year.

- Sabresfan-365

Seriously?

You really think adding Halak in goal and a 39 year old d-man is going to really make that much of a difference for them??

Before their pick was top 3 almost guaranteed... now it is like top 7 guaranteed.

whoopidy doo.

The islanders pick was no lock for a top 3. And with these moves, they could easily be fighting for a playoff spot this upcoming year, they're only one year removed from making them.

I don't see it... nope.

They also had Moulson there potting 40 goals then. They had Streit in the back end...

The Ehrhoff move at least made some sense this doesn't. They would get maybe 1 good year out of him?

Snow is basically saying he is going to go down swinging and if he goes down he is bringing the rest of them with him

No, they were never guaranteed bottom 3.

They finished bottom 5 because they lost tavares and after they replaced moulson with vanek they lost him and ultimately had nothing to replace those goals and that lead to 5th overall.

Healthy Tavares, upgrades in goal and most likely more to come. Then there's Lee, Strome and Nelson all getting better.

I guess you can say he is at least "trying"

Halak
Vanek
Boyle

too bad he got all of them about 3 years out of their prime.

(Halak isn't past his prime but his best season was that long ago)

Well they'll have strome up full time, De Haan, and Reinhart, along with a better goalie and a new PP QB.

So they still don't have Vanek or Moulson... how are they getting better?

I just don't see it. I really don't.

Who knows what Tavares coming back from major knee surgery will be like any way.

Does the buyout window start the day after the Stanley Cup is done??

I am so sick of seeing Ville Leino on our roster.

It will be Tavares coming back from major knee surgery. Off-season hasn't even begun yet. They have the 5th overall pick as trade bait and tons of cap space + the prospect of moving to Brooklyn.

He's far too motivated to get better short term. He's willing to sacrifice a lot to make sure this trade doesn't blow up in his face. Like I said even without Tavares and Vanek/Moulson they didn't finish bottom 3, don't expect them to be anywhere near that next year.

I still want to gamble with the 2015 1st instead of the 5th overall. But I am thinking they got a shot at the playoffs.

Locks?
Bruins
Penguins
Wings (they were injured a lot and still got in)
Habs

Probables?
Rags
Flyers

Up for grabs
Tampa (I picked them this year to finish 3rd in division, but I can see them taking a step back)
Blue Jackets
Islanders
Panthers
Capitals

Strome and Nelson.

They won't be Cup contenders, but I'm not expecting a top 3 pick from them.

Under the provisions of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, each team is allowed two compliance buyouts in the next two seasons, during specific windows of availability, as spelled out by the CBA.

The first of these windows opened at 11 p.m. on June 26 and closes at 5 p.m. on July 4. Any player bought out during this window has his salary-cap charge completely wiped clean, but the team must pay two-thirds of the remaining contract across twice the remaining term of the deal. The bought-out players become free agents July 5 and can sign with any team, other than the one that bought out the player.

In a shortened season, even the leafs can make the playoffs. They were both first round exits anyway.

Hey, it could be a lottery pick. I just hope Murray isn't banking on it

This time they won't have Vanek/Moulson for the entire year, and Tavares only missed like 23 games.

This. I think this is the 1st time with any of my favourite teams that I'm actually hoping/rooting for my GM to literally do nothing

3 years ago I was sitting anxiously to see who we'd sign with Pegula's money, now I'm going to be sitting in front of the TV praying that some other shmuck signs Callahan

But they will also have a competent goalie for the entire year
