Sorry, I disagree, he's better than that. I'm not saying he's Weber, nor Suter, but luke can't play more than 20 minutes, he's not a top 4, and what if Streit starts to show his age?
We would be screwed.

- puckhead17

I think Luke Schenn can easily play 20 minutes a game. I think he is definitely a top 4 talent.

Streit doesn't have the wear and tear you think he has, I have no worries moving forward with him. I'm not expecting to see the decline you speak of until maybe the last year or two of his deal; a bridge you cross when you come to it.

They need to add two dmen that makes the entire group better. It is a group right now, that's what everyone needs to understand. There are no top pairing guys in FA and there aren't any available for trade. We cant get the guy we really need, so the entire group needs to be solid. It's that simple.

yeah that about sums it up. hes gonna get overpaid. no question. but its just how much.

id take niskanen at 5.5 before i took carle at the same deal.

your description of him is 100 percent accurate, too. he is a much better player now than in dallas.

- stayinthefnnet

I agree, I actually hope Dallas signs him.

But he's not a fit in Philly. Not unless were moving some serious salary.

Tonight is gonna be a great game and I absolutely believe the winner of tonight wins the Cup. The Hawks are one win away from possibly becoming a dynasty, and while the Kings average is a few years older then the Hawks, they're only a couple years behind the Hawks from proving they're as good. This series could prove to be rivalry to prove who's the best for years to come.

Rangers on the other hand has great goaltending and a solid defensive system but the offense really isn't that great. Good but not great. I think many knew Montreal was dead in the water without Price but as a team, Montreal isn't that great of a team.

We gave Vinny $4.5 for several years, Streit at $5.25 for several years, (he looked slow, nonphysical, and was a turnover machine until the latter half of the season).
What's next? Iginla gets 2 years? Dan Boyle for 2 years?
I'm only saying that we throw cash around at suspect players, or, solid players at the latter time of their careers.
I think Niskanen would finally be $$$ well spent, & our defense really needs him.

Edit: My wife is giving me dirty looks, I have to mow the lawn, I will look back when finished

My core is Giroux, Simmonds, Voracek, Schenn, Schenn, Couturier, Read and Mason. I wouldn't let any of these guys get away.

Streit was our best dman when it counted.

I think your missing the general point that the Flyers don't have the space to add a significant FA period. I'm not saying Niskanen isn't a good player or worth roughly 5.5 mill a season. He's just not a fit here unless we move a lot of salary.

You've outlined it above yourself, we already have a lot of money dedicated to other players moving forward. No room for him.

I agree. Schenn is capable and needs to be pushed in his development a bit. He seems to do fairly well when challenged.

I think that is a good list and I would add Ghost, Morin, Hagg, and Laughton to that list right now even though they are not with the big club.

Niskanen cough: I know, too much $$$, but, I would rather pay him $6-7 a year at 27, than Streit $5 a year, at 36.

Technically, he would be getting Kimmo's $$$.

- puckhead17

Niskanen is going to get a 7/$45-$49 million. I'll take the Streit contract for 4/$22 million with only 3 left. He wasn't the problem last year, IMO.

not flyers related, but i'm surprised nobody has mentioned the plane crash that killed inquirer/dn/philly.com owner/partner lewis katz last night. he and his one remaining partner bought out the rest just this past week. interesting timing.

hopefully lenfest can help restore the outfit to what it used to be, but i doubt it.

Tragic, Katz was huge supporter of our local JCC and a real philanthropist. He will be missed.

Mason looks to be our guy for awhile

I would imagine Emery stays/resigns as there aren't any worthy backups to go after IMO. Just hope we don't overpay Ray

Heeter can look great against AHL talent but he didn't look close to being ready when he played against Carolina in the season finale.

Stolarz has potential. Just a 19 year old kid.

I can see the Flyers drafting a goalie but I hope they don't feel like they HAVE to.

I wasn't calling him a problem, but the aging Kimmo situation will be a nightmare if he isn't replaced.

As you know, so much about the position is about mental toughness and focus -- plus there are so many more mechanics to refine. I don't know of any advanced matrix for goalies, apart from breaking down situational save percentages and tracking where and how goals are scored against that goalie.
- bmeltzer

If they allow it, I'd be putting any goalie I'd be thinking of drafting through the mental wringer... get a feel for their breaking points and cognitive limits. I would prioritize the mental stuff way higher than size, athletic ability, track-record, etc.

A lot of these kids can seem focused, even-keeled and unflappable until they really hit their first taste of adversity.

Everyones homework assignment tonight is to watch this game 7

Take the orange shades off, dump out the orangeade, etc

Ask yourself how close are we really to competing with these teams?

Hopefully what's realized this team needs to do everything it can to free itself of vinnys contract, and to keep b schenn.

Bc even if b schenn isn't all he's cracked up to be, he's still a young piece to the puzzle. He'll fill some type of role I'm pretty confident in that

This team not need to make more hasty moves, just Bc we are in girouxs prime. It shouldn't work like that

- Just5

Flyers have played these teams and they won some lost others. They can definitely compete. It all comes down to matchups. Some teams are just better fit against others. Kind of like back in 07. Atlanta was a playoff team but could not for the life of it beat the last place Flyers

Even if we keep Vinny we can ice a good team. You could pick up a guy like Mason Raymond for 2 mill, sign Schenn for 2 mill, sign hall for 600k demote Rosehill(I would imagine a guy like him has a 2 way contract) and still got 2.5 mill for a 3rd Dman and backup goalie

Schenn won't sign for $2 million IMO. He'll get an offer sheet of at least $3 million.

A player such as B Schenn could be used in a trade to help bridge the gap between the Flyers and the top teams. And making a move to make the team better, as long as it's not for an older player, is not hasty.
