It's an interesting thought. The NHL seems hell bent on establishing rivalries. After the first lockout, they had the Flyers playing the Pens, Isles, Rangers and Devils 6 times each. Thats almost 1/3 of their games vs Division opponents.

They did away with that, but established the divisional playoff round to enhance the rivalries.

- PhillySportsGuy

The trouble with 1 vs 16 is travel. In those playoffs, in 1980, the Flyers first round was vs Edmonton. Then they played Minnesota. The semi-final was against the Rangers, and they finished up vs the Isles.

Did Liam just say, "only 1 team has rebounded from down 3-1 in a conference final to make it to the SCF"?

could very well be. at the time, carle's was another one of those deals where it was hard to believe.

but the writing was on the wall by that point.

- stayinthefnnet

Flyers had a deal with him, but lacked the tagging space to sign him in season because they acquired Grossmann and signed him to an extension. Then, they spent the offseason going after Suter and hoping Carle would be a fallback option.

If Pronger were still with the team, I believe they work out a deal with Carle before he reached ufa. They wouldn't have had to trade for Grossmann either.

Our whole defense has been patch worked because of losing Pronger.

It's amazing we were two games away with only 2 d men pairings and the goalies we had.
- feelingkettle

we were 1 goal away from a game 7. 1. that entire run was absurd. just think about the fact that leighton had to come off the bench in his first game back with the team after his 2 month high ankle sprain injury to start the comeback against boston.

game 82 with carle tying the game in third, and beating csp in a shootout with boucher at the other end...the flyers are 2nd worst all time in SO winning percentage.

down 3-0 on the road in game 7 to the bruins.

can you imagine if they won the cup with (frank)ing leighton in goal?

On Hockey Unfiltered, he suggested the NHL use the shootout in the playoffs. Lost all respect for Liam at that point.

no, i agree. i just mean the deal he ultimately ended up getting. at the time, it was just frustrating as a fan of the game. i always thought carle was fairly decent. sort of limited, but not bad at what he could do.

but that one, the wideman one. ugh. floodgates.

that they do. honestly. i worry very much that a certain baseball team is going to follow their model of operations too closely for comfort.

You love the shootout because your team is so good at it. It's like a bonus point.

I love how Bill refers to it as the skills competition. Thats all it is. I hate the idea of a team game being made into such an individual spectacle.

Can you imagine the NBA ending on the a three point shootout or baseball ending with a home run derby?

People have made ties out to be this awful thing, but they're better than shootouts.

End rant

honestly, i dont. it is stupid. and it is unfair. but it is a guilty pleasure.

if forced to think about it rationally, there is absolutely no way it holds up. at all.

but it is beyond exciting to watch. If i flipped the channel and somehow landed on two high school teams from norway locked in a shootout, i wouldnt change the channel.

Q: You guys really had Patrick Kane's number early in the series. What do you do to get back to that in game 7?

Answer from Darryl "I swear I'm not drunk all the time" Sutter: We'll do our best

His pressers are just...they're a trainwreck and a half.

The hockey shootout just lends itself well to deciding the extra point in a tie game. Soccer is similar, but the goalie is at more of a disadvantage than hockey imo. Bill can call it a skills comp all he wants. He's correct. Hockey is a game mainly comprised of skill, and skaters often face a goalie in a breakaway situation in a game. I have no problem with it for regular season when time and travel are more critical than playing a game every second day in the playoffs.

imho, it would make for such a better ending, not to mention the opportunity to create more rivalries by having playoffs between the conferences in earlier rounds. the flyers beat the oilers in the first round of the 1980 playoffs. i think that's awesome. the nhl (frank)ed up a good thing. shocking.
