Yeah I gotcha on the 15% upper limit part. I see my mistake there. And that example I know the pick/ compensation is off but in theory a team could easily make the trades and basically be a middle man and get picks for retaining a players cap hit. Maybe wouldn't want to do it for long years but if your not a cap spending team you could in theory buy even say a 2nd or 3rd round pick for retaining a couple mil in cap for like 2 years. Just a thought for a tool to help a team rebuild faster thru draft or move unwanted players and to get players when you're up against the cap. The bottom line is teams can really get creative now and I think they will. We could be looking at a teams cap structure that's filled many years in advantage with unknowns and picks all over the place

I think that type of trading could be a reality. Just keep in mind that the actual salary comes along with the cap hit. Some teams with financial issues might balk about paying millions in salary, just to acquire some draft picks for doing so.

Looks like a small guy who had a career year in goals... too old to be a prospect.

Yep. Was thinking like the briere deal would be ideal because the last few years the actual salary was very minimal.

Wish I could see his numbers of shots to get those 27-goals... would go a long way in determining whether he's worth the risk or not.

Didn't a team from Finland join khl? Does this lead to Finns threat to bolt to khl like Russian players? In time does it affect how teams draft Finns?

Possibly, but this guy is 26...he's not a draftee, he'd be a Miikka Pyorala type guy, veteran coming over to try & make big bucks

Yes, Jokerit. They've been aggressively expanding westward in recent years:

Sochi just got an expansion club, too... they just signed Cory Emmerton from the Wings who was a RFA, and they have Michael Leighton in net.

@billmeltzer: @jsaquella Scored some big goals at WC.SM-Liiga has been hurt by KHL so I am reluctant to put too much into season there.

Ray Ferraro on TSN Radio

"I think Mike Richards is in danger of being bought out, for sure. Maybe he gets what happened to Lecavalier....There were 20 teams that were talking to Lecavalier. Had they not watched him?"

"I remember Lecavalier walking from interview to interview with different teams last year and saying are these GMs high?....you say Mike Richards is a winner everywhere he goes, but he's a bit part"

He may be, but those tax free contracts the KHL was handing out for its top talent is pretty hard to refuse. I can't blame an athlete for following the money.

Minimal interest...need a guy who can step in for a few games if Mason gets hurt...Montreal had so much faith in Budaj, they started the kid from the AHL instead
