Or he never showed a reason to be rewarded by playing on the top line? - habby
whether he deserved it or not isn't the issue. the idea was to generate offence, not to ensure some delicate locker-room equilibrium. in the conference final, you do what you have to do to win. i guess Therrien had his reasons but i for one hope that one of those reasons wasn't that Vanek didn't deserve to play with DD/Pac. |

How about asking him about his contract? |

Players sitting on the bench see the same effort we do. Not only do I think it's possible Therrien decided he wasn't going to move Vanek up because he didn't deserve it, I think he also did for the future. By not moving vanek up he was sending a message to the whole team.
Much like with Subban earlier in the season. |

They'd be stupid not to asking him once about contracts just to get him on record saying he won't discuss it. By the 4th question they look like idiots. |

I'm not saying I wouldn't have tried them together by the end, but I can see a lot of different reasons for Therrien not to try them together.
Mtl didn't lose to NY because of coaching. |

He should've kicked him in the hands. That's what all good coaches do.

15 goals in year one
19 in his 2nd
Looks to me like a guy who could easily be scoring 25-30 a year in his prime. If he stays healthy he's gonna be a really good top 6. I doubt he's hurting your team on the top line. - habby
Agree...and those 15 goals were in a shortened season.
He's not a "finished product" either...he's still adding elements to his game. I think we are fine with Gallagher as a top 6 winger... If Galchenyuk develops like expected, Gallagher'll be exactly the type of winger that he needs.

maybe Vanek is the type of player who doesn't put in the effort if he doesn't feel the chemistry there? not sure, and not saying that's excusable. but against NY, they needed to get this guy going and nothing was tried. it was just left at status quo. Therrien did a great job overall but i think this was one area where he didn't get it done. - DoubleDown
