Yea, but if im drafting in the third round I am looking for one of two types... A guy who can project to be a hard working bottom 9 forward, or a raw, fell in the draft type player.

Third round you dont go out and accurately draft scorers. Those guys are usually gone, and when you do find one.. its usually a diamond in the rough type player..

- jak521

do the Flyers have a 3rd rounder? Homer was very generous with 2nd and 3rds

Going to be really interesting to see how much Hexy values Rinaldo... if at all.

I hope it's zero. I'd rather have players that can, you know, play.

There were far better prospects on the board when he was selected. They very likely could have drafted him later, maybe as late as the fifth round. It was a bad value pick.

Id love to see him prove me wrong, but despite an improved year as an 18 year old, he's still not looking to me like a future Tocchet.

17 goals in the WHL isn't exactly inspiring me to believe that Goulbourne will be anyhthing more than a Carcillo/Rinaldo type guy.

In 213 games in the WHL, Goulbourne has 38 goals, 42 assists for 80 points. (0.178 GPG/ 0.375 PPG)

In 185 OHL games, Rinaldo had 27 goals, 42 assists for 69 points.(0.145 GPG/ 0.372 PPG)

- Jsaquella

I agree with your stance though..

If you are going to take a reach at a player.. make it be a skilled player over a mucky player. I would have much rather seen them take a shot on Oliver Bjorkstrand then TG... just gotta cross my fingers and hope he blossoms.

Goulbourne seems like more a fighter and less of an idiot.

See my latest comment to you. I totally agree.. If you are seriously reaching in the third it better be for the potential next Mark Messier.. dont reach for a fighter/agitator

I totally agree with that. But I would take the safer pick in the 3rd if there is a guy who projects to be an NHLer bottom 9 guy.

Bjorkstrand, Lodge, Subban...lot of talent hanging out at that point.

I like that the kid seems to be improving, but he's not exactly scoring at a rate that impresses me or makes me say, "we got us a keeper!"

We only have the Bruins 3rd this year, and no 4th.

http://www.prosportstrans...tTrades/Future/Flyers.htm

Next year we don't have a 2nd or a 3rd.

That's fine. If he's out there playing solidly and not taking a ton of dumb penalties, he's helping the team.

I'm going off Holmgren's "He's Zac 2.0" comment on draft day

The WHL is (traditionally) the most defensive league, and produced a lot of rugged players compared to the OHL and the QMJHL. That's changed a bit, although the QMJHL is still a league where the scorers dominate and the WHL is still a place where you have to earn your goals a but more than the other leagues.

I'm not even concerned with offense, although that would certainly be nice. I'd like to see him develop into a better defensive player, not just on the PK, but at 5 on 5 play. Sometimes the better play is to get back in good backchecking position, rather then going for a hit that really isn't going to have a lot of effect. Although hits can be cumulative. Like to see him become a player that can be trusted late in game with the lead. During the season, that would help other players save some energy. He has to evolve as a player, and I don't think he did that last season. He's stuck in the rut of being just a pest and a hitter. And I think the Flyers share some culpability in that.

I'm not saying he won't fill the same roster spot eventually on the fourth line but he's showing himself to be a lot less knuckle head than those two and he's already playing a defensive role. I'll wait until his third year to see what role they give him in Kelowna.

Rinaldo and Carcillo are NHL caricatures. I think Goulbourne can bring a lot more to the table. I'm anxious to see what he looks like in the top 6 next season.

True. But the OHL is hardly the high scoring Q. I'm not counting on a guy who scores at a 0.17 GPG clip to become more than a 4th liner in the NHL. Even a guy like Cody MacLeod has a 31 goal season on his WHL resume.

Yeah man, he'll never be Tocchett. That's not even a possibility.

As a third round selection it was a reach.

That is why I mentioned Bjorkstrand.. I was a big fan of his from his WJC performance and sorta kept tabs on him the rest of that season. He was pretty solid for his first year of NA hockey. Finished near ppg pace. Great wheels, smart kid who has a heck of a shot. I didnt see the third round pick, but I had actually thought I saw Bjorkstrand go in the 2nd.. When I found out we passed him up for "Rinaldo 2.0" i was livid.

Holy poop.. just looked at his year this season. Kid was filthy. I knew he was playing well out there with Portland.. didnt realize how well.

That's fine, but I'm not going to expect him to be much more than a 4th line plugger, which to me is a reach in the 3rd round with more talented and highly regarded kids on the board.

Also, this upcoming season will be his fourth full year in Kelowna. Last year was his third.

He played on a stacked team. His offensive numbers may look a lot better next season.

I don't expect big things from him, but he looks like a guy with a higher upside than Ronaldo. I think Goulbourne plays on their PK too

Honestly.. if thats the case I would expect his stats to go down this next season. He played against weaker defensive matchups this year.. next year he could be a primary focus and struggle against tougher d-players.
