Am I crazy or did he end up on G's line once upon a time?

Playoffs, toward the end of the series a shift or two.

I think he did.

Rinaldo has a very poor defensive stick. Lappy needs to roll up the sleeves with him this training camp, he prob already has though

Since this is a Rinaldo blog.. I had an interesting thought.

What if the Flyers signed Thornton to play on the 4th line a head of Rinaldo, but also as act as a mentor? It could potential be a move that would pay of now and later.

Is he going to teach him the proper way to squirt water at an opponent?

If the flyers could open up enough space to allocate 1.5mil to a fourth liner that would be a nice surprise, but I'm sure that money would head toward our gaps in defense or our need for a top line LW.

Way outside Rino's comfort zone. A step at a time.

I agree with all of that, I just don't want a forward taking a regular shift who only chips in 2 goals and 4 measly points in 67 games. IMO, that is just not acceptable.

He's not going to score ever. That's not even a question. I've read through the thread and see people saying he could maybe score double digit goals. Pipe dreams can't fathom that as a possibility.

The fact that they've been trying to teach him responsible defensive play at the NHL level is a joke. If we had more viable forwards in the system he should still be at the AHL level getting fill in call ups.

I don't even dislike him in the least but it is what it is.

My thought on Rinaldo is that he's a lesser skilled, albeit less potentially detrimental, Carcillo.

When Rinaldo plays his best, he's drawing penalties and getting under the skin of opposing teams. The trouble is, he's as apt to take a penalty-be it a reputation call or not-as he is to draw a penalty.

I say he's not as skilled as Carcillo because Carcillo is a former double digit goal scorer, who can actually play the game. And while Rinaldo can be a loose cannon, Carcillo is certainly more prone to brain dead play and actions that hurt his team.

To me, Rinaldo is a 13th forward. He's a guy you pop in against less disciplined teams, where he can agitate and drawn calls.

We're lucky we had any Flyers post season hockey as ugly as it was.

The problem is, they HAVE viable guys, but they like Rinaldo's energy. Ben Holmstrom could have been up years ago, providing solid 4th line play. Eric Wellwood, prior to his injury, was slotted behind Rinaldo.

Hell, they just drafted a Rinaldo clone in the 3rd round last draft!

too bad Carcilo (who most were happy to see him gone) killed our offseason.

To me he's a solid AHL third liner eating minutes, learning and entertaining the crowd. If he had stayed on the farm maybe we could trust him with more than 5 minutes a game next season and the NHL coaching staff wouldn't have to expend so much energy trying to prop him up as a viable NHL 4th liner.

I thought I read something recently about how surprisingly well Goulbourne has developed over the past two seasons.

Looking at his stats from this year are pretty impressive..

I'd be fine with that, as well.

Trouble is, the Flyers like Rinaldo, or at least Holmgren liked having guys like him or Carcillo around.

Going to be really interesting to see how much Hexy values Rinaldo... if at all.

I don't know how viable those guys are since they don't trust them enough to bring them up.

I take exception to the Goulbourne as a Rinaldo clone suggestion. At the very least the kid can actually kill penalties and put the puck in the net which is way more than you'll ever hope to get from Rinaldo.

He's a good skater and decent defensive player, but he's not likely to be a scorer. He was drafted to be the next Carcillo/Rinaldo type guy.

He's only getting spot minutes in the top 6. Mostly playing third line shut down minutes. He'll get his shot next season to move up in the line up.

Yea, but if im drafting in the third round I am looking for one of two types... A guy who can project to be a hard working bottom 9 forward, or a raw, fell in the draft type player.

Third round you dont go out and accurately draft scorers. Those guys are usually gone, and when you do find one.. its usually a diamond in the rough type player..

If they drafted him to be that guy they're going to be pretty disappointed. That's wasn't his game this season at all.

17 goals in the WHL isn't exactly inspiring me to believe that Goulbourne will be anyhthing more than a Carcillo/Rinaldo type guy.

In 213 games in the WHL, Goulbourne has 38 goals, 42 assists for 80 points. (0.178 GPG/ 0.375 PPG)

In 185 OHL games, Rinaldo had 27 goals, 42 assists for 69 points.(0.145 GPG/ 0.372 PPG)
