Colin Dambrauskas: Johnny "Hockey" Gaudreau; Skill Over Size?
- Colin Dambrauskas

Being that Flames fans have always been charitable towards the league's small, soft, danglers, it's only to be expected that they would embrace the limitless potential of a guy like gadreau.

but seriously, he's pretty slick. It looks like his bag of tricks is pretty deep too. He won't ever be able to go through the mountain, but he looks like he's a number of ways of getting around it. Here comes a big (frank)ing mountain though.

Funny world eh? You Oil fans always vehemently defend your smallish soft danglers but now you come here to discuss mountains when we get one.

It's a fickle world of hockey fans. One thing I do note is that if Crosby had Dave Semenko playing on his line, Pitt would probably have had more than one Cup here this last little while. I am an advocate to get Mr. Wolf on a line with JG & Mr Backlund next year.

Sure, let's see what his actual scoring prowess can be with some skill on a line with him.

beartschi/wideman for coyle

I hate to trade Baertschi, but I would likely do this. Coyle is the espy act type of player we need on the opposite wing of a Gaudreau or Baertschi or Klimchuk.

I'm curious where you guys see the potential C we could draft at #4 positioned down the riots. Is he a#1 and Mony #2 or opposihow do you see this for

I'll say the same thing about Nuge: it's a physical impossibility for him to ever go through checks with the same ability that Crosby, Getzlaf and Hossa can. Hopefully we can count Gadreau in the same category as Kane though in the ability to potential beat any defender he needs to with nice moves and skating.

I think the centres of this draft could create a nice 1a 1b situation. Maybe they both never reach elite 1 st line centre status, but they could definitely become a lethal combo.

As of right now I put money in the future 1c role, I know lots have him pegged as an excellent 2c, but I think he's going to keep getting better and better.

I don't want to trade him wither, HOWEVER if a player of around the same age and potential (Coyle, Toffoli) that plays RW and has more size is possible. I think thats worth considering. He's an asset thats worth something.

He doesn't move for a pick. The only reason I think he's that player is because teams can use him, he'd bring in a good return, and we have an excess of LW.

But if we win the lotto and take reinhart. He's another RH shot that we can see as RW on a future 1st line.

JG/Money/reinhart has a nice future sound to it, with Bert/Backs/Poirer as a 2nd. Both lines with a center that thinks 200ft hockey. Some speed, and both with a wing that can get abit more in the dirty areas.

Monahan is looking strong in the face-off circle at worlds, getting better every game.

i agree with you there. A lot of Newy like qualities in his play. Calm, not flashy, but he's thinking out there

JG and backs I don't think fit.

JG needs a trigger that can one time his quick passes (like stlouis/stamkos....and thats not because of the size comparison, or Hull/Oates). Wish he came along when iggy was here, Iggy could rattle them off from the hash marks all day with him.

JG/2way big centre that clears space/RW snipper. Cammy could have a big year with him, but thats too small of a line......Going out on a limb, I think we'll see him playing with colborne a lot and colborne having a decent year. Not cause I think colbornes that great, but because I think he's complimentary in the right areas and showed progress in the areas that a player like JG uses.

I think it's completely possible. I see a few scenarios happening.

1. FLA feels they're set with Barkov and Busjstad as #1 and 2 C and prefer a wing to play with them. They taks Bennett over Reinhart because they feel his game translates better to wing than Reinhart. BUF either takes Ekblad feeling he is BPA or Reinhart because they need offence and are not sold on Grigerenko, Hodgson and Girgensons as the top 3 or Reinhart could be a good winger(which I believe they really need). Then they take Reinhart. If Reinhart is left, I think EDM sees to similar a comparison to RNH and wants to mix it up and grabs the bigger Draisaitl. This leaves us Reinhart.

2. BUF takes Reinhart leaving Ekblad on the table. EDM has to decide. Do they need a bigger skilled C in the system, which they really lack or another D to add eventually to Marincin, Klefbom etc. I think they take Draisaitl and try to trade for or sign a dman

This is why I think he would fit well with monahan, mony might not have the one timer down yet but I do belive the kid ended the season at 16% shooting I think its sake to say the kid can snipe

Maybe not the 1timer, but Mony sure knows how to go to the net and he could be left cleaning up a lot of junk left by JG.

Virtanen, a pure finisher would look awfully nice on JG opposite wing.

I love Backs possession & him & JG with a big guy with hands riding shotgun could surprise a few people. But you don't have to twist my arm about Money & Johhny & I still would like to experiment the Wolf on that line, but Colborne wouldn't be bad choice either.

I don't know why, but probably because we have so many new young guys ready to get NHL time that my expectations of whoever we pick, unless it's Ekblad by some fluke, is not going to be in our lineup next year. Too many guys we need to see, Knight, Reinhart, Arnold, Agostini, Granlund all need NHL minutes next year.
Hell, I cant even fathom Porrier or Klimchuk in there yet & they are very close to getting some auditions with the Flames. Who would have ever thought we would have too many young guys being ready at one time. Heard we moved up to 6th with Hockey futures.

Colin, I could care less we have a 4th or 5th rounder.

Yea,I'm certainly not thinking next year, I'm thinking long term and ceilings. I think both Reinhart and Draisaitl would be good fits because Monahan, at the moment at least, seems like he'll be more of a scoring C and the other 2 playmakers which would offer different looks to the opposition.

YES on VIRT. RH, sniper.

Time to get Whipper calling me crazy when I say I'd take him over Dalcolle again.

reinhart/bennet/ekblad/virtanen/draisiti/dalcolle as my list. But if we get a later pick to grab a Tuch or Ritchie, Virtanen can be left out.

Not because virt plays in calgary, I just think he fits a need. Shinkaruk was very close to that fit last year as well.
