Boyle is not the type of dman we need.
We need a strong defensive dman!

- Fakepartofme

He might not be the best guy, but we do need a solid vet who can help lead and provide some calm. Just can't think of many other ufa men we should pursue. Would be pricey though no doubt.

Kevin Bieska - expensive option
Matt Greene - cheaper option

Both RD too.

With Rielly/Gardiner, why do we need Boyle? He's not that good defensively.
- RogerRoeper

Better than Franson defensively?

He plays a smart and good puck moving game, still need those kind of vets. Key for me is his experience.

I agree, we do need a vet back there.

I just don't know who else is there to be had. Maybe a trade none of us see coming?

I guess the concern could be were putting too much emphasis on getting a guy or two to fix our D when it probably needs to be a team wide effort and fix.

Ill take Bieska over Boyle...Canucks likely selling off assets this year.

The logical choice, but depends on the assets needed to give up for him. With Boyle its just a signing. Canucks might and likely would want a Kadri, Gardiner, 1st rounder as part of a deal.

Anyone planning on travelling to Columbus to get drunk and ornery at a Blue Jackets game?

You may want to rethink your plans.

Acquire both then, you guys tend to forget we have 23.3M of capspace this summer, majority of the roster wont be resigned. And Boyle would likely want a 2 year deal probably for 7-8M, 3.5-4M per

I think Boyle would be great for Gardiner and Rielly, replaces Franson.

Phaneuf-Rielly
Boyle-Gardiner

Who would you take, doesn't really matter about shooting left and right at this point, who would you take Matt Greene or Orpiks if you had option?

I think Boyle is the perfect veteran to acquire but he should not be the only one they sign/trade for. After Boyle we still need a top guy for Phaneuf, most likely through trade would be the only way.

I suppose I wasn't clear in my comment. I would love Bieksa, but not interested in selling our youth/1st rounders to get him. If we struggle next season so be it, but the leafs need to stay the course and learn to draft, develop, be patient and give youth the chance to and grow.

If the day ever comes when we're the Bruins, Pens or an annual playoff team then we should be buyers and trade some youth or picks.

All depends the price, for guys like Bieksa or Giordano. If its not worth it, move on from that. If we cannot afford those guys or it doesn't make sense the price, no point in giving up significant assets that will burn us down the road for a short term gain.

Unless we go the Free Agency route and sign guys like: Boyle, Orpiks, Matt Greene, Robidas, Willie Mitchell

Greene probably cheaper a bit. He's younger.

Both are pretty banged up.

People keep bringing up orpik but I don't think that's the answer.

IMO leafs need a stop gap on D - 1 guy for like 2 years who brings vet experience, some toughness and can help out the young guys.

Finn
Granberg
Percy
MacWilliam

there are others who could make the jump too.

Nilsson had a good season too.

would be best not to move ANY assets and get a guy off the FA for a stop gap.

Tough decisions ahead. I'm not too optimistic for next year..

Thank goodness we have a good draft pick at least.

Matt Greene will be lucky to get 1 mil. He's a healthy scratch and can't skate. He plays 10 minutes a night, 2 of those on the PK because he doesn't have to move.
