Patches was 14th on the team in average ice time killing penalties.

Perhaps the Leafs don't want Kessel killing penalties....they would prefer him using his minutes at even strength and the power play. Doesn't make him a bad defensive player.

wow im sorry i brought up the comparison.
i wasn't criticizing Kessel. i was just talking about the different perspectives we take on our players.

I know I shouldn't be talking about this now, but it looks like Vail and Thrower won't get contracts...

What happened to thrower?

So...Patches kills penalties. AND scores more goals than Kessel.

And no, not killing penalties does not make Kessel a bad defensive player. Sucking as a defensive player makes Kessel a bad defensive player.

Kessel couldn't find his the inside of his own zone with a map

Agreed, Kessel couldn't find his the inside of his own zone, even with a map too!

Got injured at the end of the season (ankle), apparently Habs medical staff strongly suggested he shut down his season early and get surgery as quick as possible. I find that odd, if they didn't intend on signing him.

As a player, I'll take Kessel before Pacioretty on the Habs' roster.

But I'll take Pacioretty's $4.5M before Kessels' $8M.

I confess that my annoyance with pacioretty has nothing to do with his on ice performance I just don't like his face.

edit: also withdrawing to the locker room in apparent agony twice a game and then coming back 3 minutes later is getting old.

Howard. I actually think Patches is a very good player.

However I think Kessel is a little underrated defensively. He does back check and is pretty good at getting the puck out of his zone.

Anyway...Go JETS!
