Spezza just moved in a street down from me in Etobicoke. Ran into him and the wife yesterday on a stroll with their two young kids and another on the way. The guy absolutely loves it here in Toronto and one could argue he could benefit from a change of scenery. I would happily give him a shot on the 1st line and he would be an immediate upgrade depth-wise for our top 6...who knows how he would handle the added pressure here though..
Phaneuf I would trade to the Jets for Byfuglien straight up no questions asked. - canada_dry
If the sens were to trade Spezza to the Leafs, we would need a premium on the return - otherwise, you'll have to wait for free agency. not happening to a rival without a very sweet pot.
You would trade Phaneuf for Bufuglien? I think all leaves would do that...just no jets.
Phaneuf is going to yield really unattractive offers to the leafs and I'll bet he ends up staying until the cap takes a decent jump - at that point, his salary is less of a joke. |

If Chevy trades for Phaneuf, I bet he'll be fired at the end of the season. |

I can't wait until Phaneuf gets traded and the puppets can find someone else on the Leafs to talk about and whatever team he gets traded to can start with the "He's better than people give him credit for. I think it was a good trade and I'm happy to have him".
All of these trade scenarios have been ridiculous so far. I doubt any deal is going to be Phaneuf alone to anyone. It will be part of a "culture changing" deal. Phaneuf, Kadri, Lupul, Gardiner, Franson and Reimer are all guys that I would not be surprised if they were moved this summer. |

I see you read the article on TSN.
Move Phaneuf to Vancouver for Bieksa.
What would Dallas give up for Phaneuf? Goligoski and a 2nd? the flip Goligoski.
As for Minnesota it's Vanek or Phaneuf. Who would you take?
Hope they do move him at the draft. |

how many times in the last 10 years has your franchise finished bottom 5?
exactly, easily the most embarassing franchise in the league since basically gretkzy left minus 1 year.
yet daily you are chirping about something. - big_dion
Man you guys are really taking this personally.
Just because his team is sh*t doesnt' mean he still can't laugh at the failure of other's.....I laughed, and mine team is sh*t as well!.....you might say that all we(Buffalo fan) have! |

He was already captain when the extension was signed; example of C being demoted in SJ (Marleau) has worked out fine and he has signed subsequent contracts...not a big hurdle. It seems like the Leafs simply believe they are better off without him. I'm not so sure but will judge the deal if it happens based on what the return is. - Deeps27
I was speaking of after they traded for him.He was made the face of the franchise and ordained captain. It would be more awkward than making your #1 goalie your back up in demoting him. |

The Leafs fluke out and make the playoffs (in a shortened season) once in 10 years, and now they are contenders. |

I'd Take Phaneuf on Philly if TOR ate at least $2mill of salary. Phaneuf is a good defender but the Leafs are using him in a way that doesn't work. The offence is gone, he has no business on the PP anymore, you can play him in defensive situations and he will do fine, giving him the time he plays on PP for rest will make him more effective on the ice as well. |

Agreed. Phaneuf is the problem to so called hockey people but everyone ignores Franson who had the teams worse +/- and did frank all after the 1st quarter of the season in terms of production as well. |

Don't really know why the Jets would have too much interest in Phaneuf. We have a lot of defensive depth right now: Toby, Bogo, Stuart, Trouba, Ellerby, Pardy, Postma, Redmond, Clitsome, Morrissery in the pipes and not to mention Kulda overseas might deserve a look. True most of them are young guys, but most have looked good and trading for Phanuef would only stifle their development by taking away a roster spot. |

The Sens have been trying to get rid of Spezza for quite some time. I have a friend very close to the top brass. He's a great guy, but doe's not lead by example- he's pretty soft, and only turns it on when it suits him. Maybe a change of scenery is all he needs, but I think it's a character thing... God knows when he wants to play he's capable. Just not much drive, and not a great guy to have around when you have a ton of great young talent.
Regarding Phaneuf, he might be a bone head- but if he was playing a little less minutes, he'd be more effective. He's prone to mistakes when he gets too much ice time. He does a pretty decent job considering he's defending the leagues best night in night out... and when he hit's the net, his shot is a cannon. I'd have to think if the Leafs ate a mil per year many teams would be interested- especially teams where he might be a number 2 or 3 guy... or Edmonton who's D is a joke. They are NOT progressing at a nice steady pace- they don't play as a team at all and have drafted poorly after Eberle.
That's my 2 cents! |
