I'm not sure what kind of consistency you're referring to. Every team is inconsistent. The Blackhawks and Blues looked terrible for the last few weeks of the season. I remember the Kings going several games without scoring a single goal.

I admit this team has more consistency problems than others, but I think it's due to a lack of maturity and a lack of talent. They are a fringe playoff team. They are going to win some and lose some. Would you rather them lose every other game or win 5 in a row then lose 5 in row?

Just knowing what you're going to get from a player, period-to-period, game-to-game. Hartnell, in particular, has huge swings in performance, mental engagement, attention to detail and general compete level. He's a microcosm of the team. Maybe he just doesn't have it in him to even out his peaks and troughs... maybe he's too casual in his approach to the game. But he's a vet and a team leader... I'd be worried about how that rubs off on the next generation of Flyers.

Retto Berra got traded for a 2nd rounder to a team that already had 2 goalies.

It obviously depends on many intangibles, but your severely undervaluing a player who still scored 20 goals in what might have been the worst statistical season of his career.

I'm not saying the return will be extravagant, but we should be able to get a roster player for Vinny.

- mochoson

He's a good, young goalie going to a team with one goalie signed & one vet who is a UFA this summer.

Lecavalier had a decent year looking solely at goals, but he didn't really play well. He has had 4 straight years marred by injury, is limited to being a center, isn't a good two way player and is 33 going on 34.

Personally if they get a roster player, I'd be surprised. I think they might get a 3rd if they eat some money

I like Vinny and Hartnell but Vinny doesn't fit with the team, I get that he was a guy Homer thought could play wing with Giroux but it didn't work last season. Hartnell is another guy who sometimes did and sometimes didn't work with Giroux. I would rather have Hartnell play on the 2nd line with Schenn and Simmonds or Coots and Read. Flyers need a guy who can forcheck and win battles like hartnell did but also be a above average skater, puck handler and passer. If we have to I am ok with Raffl, he shows promise but he needs to finish more. Only problem I had with him was he couldn't bury the puck.

The only reason to move Hartnell is if you are trying to get a 1-2 punch of Giroux McDavid.

That would be a concern.

Overall, I think Hartnell's pros far outweigh his cons. He may lack consistency from game to game, but his year to year consistency is strong. A bankable 20 goals and 50 points from your PF is a nice thing.

As Bill pointed out, he draws more penalties than he takes, which is saying something because he takes a bunch of penalties.

My two primary concerns with Hartnell:

1. Ever since his 37 goal season, he's been playing further and further from the net. He's not getting as many dirty goals as he used to. He needs to get back to his bread and butter or he won't be as effective.

2. When he does begin to fall off, it will be a rough fall. His primary contribution is his offensive play. If he can't contribute offensively, he is pretty useless because he doesn't do much else well. He doesn't skate well, he doesn't play defense well and he's very undisciplined.

Ultimately, it's playing russian roulette with him. At some point, his game will fall off and his contract will hurt the team. It could happen next year. It could happen when he's 37.

IMO, the priorty should be getting the right winger(s) for Giroux and Schenn (if Schenn is being tabbed for this spot). If hartnell doesn't fit after making thy happen then maybe move him, but I think he still brings a lot of value if he's on the right line and playing well. At times I think he's guilty of trying raise his skillevel to match g and Voracek when what they really need is him to go bang some bodies and get in front of the net. I don't think it's a problem of g and hartnell don't mix or g and Voracek don't mix, I think it's a combination of the 3 that doesn't work well enough for a top line on a nightly basis

He should have straight-up run Lundqvist in Game One to set the tone. I'm 100% dead serious.

Yeah, pretty much how I feel about him in a really big nutshell. I like him personally... I'm just worried he's on the verge of passing his Ryan Smyth/Gary Roberts best-by date.
