Giroux for weber - JoeRussomanno
Makes sense.
When the Flyers lose next year in the playoffs, Shea Weber is a larger man and presents a larger target for our desires to pin failure on one player. After all, Giroux is just a little guy.

Giroux for Weber
- watsonnostaw
As bat poop insane as that sounds on the surface, it makes some sense when you think about it. We've got young centers coming in that are gonna need minutes. Coots can take 19-20 mins a night as it is. BSchenn can eat 15-16. Laughton is gonna end up taking around that, and Vinny would still take that extra 10 minutes easily and would probably need more. It would leave an offensive gap that might invite some young players to step up like Giroux did originally when Richie and Carter were traded. If I'm not mistaken G's NMC hasn't gone into effect yet. Maybe it's an option that should be explored. |

Honestly - I would hate to pull the trigger on that but in the end I would. weber is less of a cap hit and fills a much more difficult role to fill imo. both are studs. - moylander
You do have to look at it, but in the end, I would pass...reluctantly. Painfully. Agonizingly.
Because Giroux is younger, and you just have to believe that what you have drafted gets you where you need to go |

I wonder if Homer lies awake in bed staring at the ceiling with the thought "how the hell did they match the 27 million? I should have made it X." - the deaninator
i wonder if parting with either one of coots or schenn wouldve done it in the package. |

None of them are #1 centers though. I don't think other teams would have to respect the Flyers down the middle at that point. They need to get the #1 Dman while keeping the #1 center IMO. |

the last home grown defenseman to play significant years for the flyers was Chris Therien, the Flyers have to trade for such players on defense (and goal)
cost good players or assets to get defensemen of that caliber |

everything reported was nashville wanted one/both of them in a deal.
Homer (supposedly) had the upper hand in that he didn't have to deal with them, and the contract was supposed to be a poison pill nashville could never afford.

if it was both i could see, but if it was just one, hes foolish for thinking he was just gonna strongarm his way into it.
not to ruffle feathers, but seeing everyones WE GOT HIM WE GOT HIM, become HOW DARE THEY MATCH was hilarious.
as much as i dont like attempting to poach another teams player, those are the rules and homer was acting within the rules to do the best for his team. cant fault him at all for that. but the whole how dare nashville match who do they think they are attitude really stunk.

That's reasonable. I think we'd still be really deep down the middle, depending on BSchenn and Coot's growth. If Coots got an expanded offensive role because of the loss of Giroux he could definitely be a 20 goal scorer or more. My concern is trading Giroux for a player older than Giroux. Weber will be effective into his late 30s, but if we're trading the life and heart of our team, we shouldnt have to compromise. We should take someone more around the age of Coots and BSchenn, so our core can match itself age wise. Someone more like OEL or Pietrangelo, who are both like younger Webers if only slightly less. |

I think it was more because his contract's first year value alone equaled nashville's entire year's worth of ticket sales, it was crazy that nashville would risk working farther in the red than they already were/are |

oh i totally understand why. it was borderline fiscal lunacy. but good for them as a franchise for standing up to the big guy and keeping the only franchise player theyve ever had.
i totally understand being bummed as a flyers fan. but bummed and arrogantly expectant are different to me.
knowing what you know now. going into next season. would you offer coots, schenn, a first, and another asset for him? |

Pietrangelo is 24, OEL is 22. It's just potentially another half decade of having a #1 dman. I just think if we're trading Giroux, we need to maximize return, because we can. |
