what was Nonis supposed to do at the deadline with no cap space, limited tradeable assets and a team that was obviously more than a player or two away from being a playoff threat? criticizing him for not making any moves at the deadline is terribly shortsighted. however criticizing him for making an offer for Vanek is warranted. - DoubleDown
If he's more than a player or two away you trade away assets for whatever! Raymond, Franson should have gone then! Even for mid - late picks. You make the cap space and maybe make the right deal. |

How come when you make a trade you don't swap cap space? No one was looking for God to come back in the trade. Just a change in style and approach. - honesthockey
well the Isles weren't interested in taking on any salary in that particular deal. that's why Montreal was able to get him at such a low cost. |

ok but Mike wasn't criticizing him for not stripping assets, he was criticizing him for not getting the team help. |

again, he had no cap space. which was completely his fault mind you. but what was he supposed to do? and if he had dealt your first round pick you'd probably be the first one to pick up the torch. |

agree 100%. that's why i think that Nonis going after him (assuming that rumour is true) would be a huge red flag. |

Exactly. But. It tells me him and Carlyle are worlds apart on team concept and further validates my thought that when he didn't get help, Carlyle said (frank) it we'll do it your way. Hench collapse. |

And you said the criticism isn't warranted because the leafs are more than a player or two away from being anything in the playoffs and problems with the cap. I criticize Nonis because he should have seen these things and moved his middling assets for help in the future. |

vanek on the 2nd line with Kadri and Lupul would have helped a little.. since clarkson wouldnt be there
I am glad no moves were made thought.. nothing would have helped much at all

Nonis took over and Brought in Orr, FML, fraser, Clarkson, Bolland, Gleason ...
he sucks as a coach even with players the GM brings in for him. |

personally i do not like Nonis as a GM. i see absolutely no rhyme or reason to what he does, almost like he makes it up as he goes. that said, i think right now, he's GM the way Sherman is GM in Colorado. i don't think he can take a piss without Shanahan's approval right now. |

Why does it have to be someone available? Unless it's really the only available trade deadline. - honesthockey
You had said the deadline inaction, so I was going off that |

I don't think it woulda. All three players going to the same spot on the ice with no one getting dirty. Woulda been a complete failure like Kadri with Kessel and JVR. All playing the same game. |

Nieds is a FA this year and Pronger is in a real need for a new team I hear. |
