not like he was great not enough to say they lost the trade.

Never realized how many trades they made back then

Just because Turgeon went on to have a great career a player like LaFontaine is what the Sabres needed desperately at that time. Turgeon didn't develop a two way game until well after he left the Islanders anyway, he was always considered a one dimensional player. I still think the trade was pretty even

Fun Fact.

Hogue, Turgeon, Krupp, and McLlwain went on to play 2456 games and 1720 points post trade.

LaFontaine, Wood, and Hiller went on to play 788 games and 621 points post trade.

ppg is higher for the LaFontaine bunch.

Fact is if LaFontaine stayed healthy this conversation wouldn't be even thought of and he would have helped the team in 99 win the cup. It would still be viewed as the second best trade ever and there wouldn't be a doubt (Hasek trade number 1 obviously)

Also neither team benefited the ultimate prize in a championship so it doesnt matter. Turgeon played more games with other teams than the Islanders and so did Krupp

Turgeon was 1124gp and 1004 points on his own.

The problem is the injuries happened and we know the results in 99'.

Briere and a 3rd for Gratton and a 4th was a better trade IMO.

Turgeon only played 255 games in an Islanders uniform (injuries not a factor)

LaFontaine played 268 in a Sabres uniform no need to add the injury thing

LaFontaine out scored Turgeon for the team he was traded too.

It was a good hockey trade across the board for both teams and it did bring us the most dynamic position player this franchise had since 11.

I would to this day still take a healthy LaFontaine over Turgeon at that time.

Hell I would still do it now

Briere for Gratton is a close 3rd in the best trades though

Which is why it was made.

Knowing what we do though, do you still make that trade?

Erhoff, Adam, and a 2nd for Stall....he would be an EXCELLENT mentor for Reinhart/Bennett and McDavid/Eichel....plus we might score 151 goals next season

seems like a pretty good trade for both parties. the sabres gave up more for the better player. the lafontaine-mogilny-hawerchuk teams from the early 90s were really fun to watch. i still think the 92-93 sabres were the best sabres team i have ever seen (i was a toddler when the sabres went to the cup against the flyers). was sneaky pete gonna get mogilny to 76 goals? lafontaine had the best look a sabre ever had at a scoring title (lemieux beat him by 12 points- and had 160 points in 60 games after coming back from hodgkins). lafontaine and turgeon look similar on paper, but lafonatine was a leader with talent and a high motor.

That really doesn't answer my question.

Knowing what we know about the trade, do you still make it?

And yes there's still a good chance Mogilny gets 76. Turgeon had 132 pts with 74 assists that season.

And for years I thought he was diving. Turns out he's just a wussy. Does this mean I owe roy9ner an apology? Or can we just call it good with the time I wasted watching him?

I called my son in from the other room and made him watch this during the game. He was wearing his Roy T-short at the time and went and changed.

Me: yep.

LaFontaine wasn't just our best player, he was the face of the franchise while he was here. Turgeon was incredibly talented (great sniper) but was called, ahem, the Tin Man for a reason. Is popularity the best measure? No, but it's one measure and I can't get away from the fact that Patty for me took hockey from something I liked to something I was obsessed about.

Ultimately, neither brought a cup to their teams so I feel we can be happy with the value delivered.

I think people forget how good Uwe Krupp was, a guy in 729 games he was a a plus 89 player. That's a guy you want on the ice when holding onto a lead or on a pk. In the trade buffalo gained one great talent. The NYI gained a great player and 2 very good players Krupp and Benny hogue! All 3 of them where huge in the 92 93 cup run if not for dale hunter that team would have won the cup

Thanks for the answer.

My answer is no and I'm a huge Lafontaine fan.

You have Hogue putting up 70+ points and no need to move Andreychuk in 93. You then have Turgeon, Andreychuk, Hawerchuk, Mogilny, and Hogue when you face Montreal.
