he is way ahead of Giroux and Getz at the time they turned 23 years old
- homiedclown

Getz put up 91 points when he was 23

Giroux 76...I would say he is ahead of Giroux but not Getz

I mentioned last night that I'm not sold he's a championship caliber 1st line winger.

IMO he's a faster Hodgson. Completely one dimensional

- sbroads24

yeah so you put him with a girgens and ennis

let them fly and girgens is quick to come back to play solid d

Which is fine, but he's not someone I'm offering a top 3 defensemen in Myers, Risto or Zadarov for.

Maybe Pysyk and a pick or Foligno

What I basically mean is that I'f i'm trading one of my stud defenders, a guy like Pacioretty or someone close to his caliber has to come back

A top pairing D man that can play 20 plus minutes a night and on a more offensive team would be a 40- 50 pt per year (if not more) player every year?

This is all hypothetical anyway but considering they are being dominated in the playoffs and even more so without Barre they might be thinking differently about not have a D that can play big minutes like Myers can...
- Stripes77

Yes, they might hypothetically wonder how the series would have gone had Duchene been available to play, however.

http://www.denverpost.com...-defensemen-usually-arent

Snippet:

Since the NHL instituted the draft in 1963, only 12 times has a defenseman been selected first, and the list of household names among them is very small. One — Rick Pagnutti, drafted first by Los Angeles in 1967 — never made it out of the minor leagues. The last defenseman selected first was the Avalanche's Erik Johnson, by St. Louis in 2006, and he has yet to live up to expectations. Denis Potvin, by the New York Islanders in 1973, is the only top-pick defenseman to have a Hall of Fame career.

While I agree 10000% on avoiding Ekblad, we won't have to worry about the stigma of picking a defensemen 1st, because we pick 2nd.

Last 2 guys picked 2nd were Hedman (who's really good not great) and Doughty who's excellent.

Good point I think it would be safe to say they would get more than 12 shots in a playoff game

It's not about where they are selected, it's about the quality of the defenseman. You pick a player first because you want the best probability of them turning into a star.

It's as dumb /superstitious to assume that any defenseman draft 1st overall will not win a cup as to assume any Center selected 1st will. Magical thinking.

Look there is only one solution to all this discussion of who we should take. That answer is Sam Reinhardt.

Unless its a center, it doesn't matter who the Sabres Draft. Until they draft a bona-fida 1st line center superstar, they will never win the cup. It's just that simple.

I didn't say top flight D-men don't help win champions. They do. Top flight D-men are not typically found in the first part of the 1st round.

Panthers don't need a center....they are in desperate need of a wide receiver.
