I've always thought the Oilers should have tried to trade that #1 pick (Yak) for D or a big package of NHL goods/ready prospects.

Meh. Murray would not be helping us much now anyway, plus we already had solid D prospects (not of the quality of Murray ,mind you), and was not really the organizational need.
Yak has plenty of time to develop. Just because Yak isn't Pavel Bure 100 games into his career he is a bust. Murray isn't exactly Scott Neidermeyer now yet is he?

Both teams need ready NHL d men and goaltending. Both teams have blue chip prospects. A good trade involves a prospect for an NHL ready player.

I guess the Oilers were floating the pick around, but nothing substantial was offered at the time. Hindsight might prove otherwise, but we will never know what was offered.
