National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman on Thursday said Nassau County has itself to blame for the New York Islanders' impending move out of town.

"Why after 10 years and millions of dollars they couldn't figure out how to put a new building on the island, I don't know," said Bettman when asked about the team's planned move next year to Brooklyn's Barclays Center. "It's not uncommon for towns to step up and support these buildings."

Last October, the Islanders signed a 25-year lease with Barclays Center, which will begin after the team's contract expires with the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Islanders struggled for years to convince residents and Long Island leaders to renovate the Coliseum, which was built in 1972. In 2011, voters rejected a plan to borrow $400 million to help pay for a new arena. Team owner Charles Wang vowed not to renew the lease at the Coliseum when it expired in 2015.

Bettman described that lease as "one of the most onerous leases in the worst building in the league." He dismissed criticism that Wang is content with the Islanders' woeful performance. The team has missed the playoffs in six of the past seven seasons and finished last in the Metropolitan division this season.

As for potential new ownership, Wang is weighing several "expressions of interest" for the team he took full control of in 2004, Bettman said.

Bettman said any interest in the Islanders has been recent, and that the team wouldn't leave Brooklyn under a sale because it already is locked into a contract with Barclays Center. "The team's not going anywhere," he said. "I don't think Charles would sell it to be moved."

I would say besides Tavares everyone else would be gone. Actually I would keep KO as well, but anyone else I would be listening for offers

Ok that counts

I am serious though. I know no one will believe it but it is the truth. I wonder if the fans bought it if we can do a better job

A conglomerate of fans owning and operating the team... no they would not do any better.

Well, I believe in the prospects he's assembled...not much beyond that though. I understand that's enough around here to suddenly mean I'm spokesperson for his rebuild

I do think that that things can turn around very quickly. A starting goalie, top four dman and coach who has a clue can make this a damn good team fast. Two out of three there can go a long ways as well.

if you read it correctly, IM spokesperson, you are to a lesser extent...man, you cant get anything right!!!

If we sign Orpik its gonna be Brendan Witt all over again.
- Vukota

If we sign Douglas Murray -- which, let's face it, is probably a more realistic scenario for Snow than Orpik -- it's gonna be like Brendan Witt all over again. At least the post-2008 version.

idk, Hall vs Seguin is debatable.

Seguin had a monster year once he got the 1c spot on a team

Keeping two players and looking to move everyone else? That doesn't sound rash at all.
