We should probably trade Coburn now right? He's starting to regress.

Go for a younger backup like Greiss or Montoya or Peters or Hutton. No more old/physically-limited backups.
- Feanor

or find another undrafted goalie like Bob or Eddie Lack etc

Anything positive is good, but the higher the better.

But you need to add some context. If you start 70% of your shifts in the offensive zone, it's easier to get a higher corsi number or percentage. Compared to someone like Couturier who takes a ton of starts in the defensive zone.

- bradleyc4

Putting Vinny's numbers into context just makes it even worse... he's got the cushiest zone-starts of any Flyer period, against the easiest competition the Rangers have to offer.

Hes getting ragged on bc thank god hes not playing more minutes than that.
He was signed for specifically this time of year when our younger players like B Schenn are likely to struggle.
He is a total liability out there at 4.5 per.
Hes a bullseye and deservedly so

- Just5

I like you. But if I continue discussing Vinny with you, I might wind up punching everyone in the face.

Quality of competition is also a big deal.

The reason many of us have been disappointed, to say the least, with Vinny's performance is because he sees a low level of competition, takes a large amount of offensive zone face-offs and still has one of the worst CF% on the team.

Plus, statistically, he makes every player on the ice worse when he's with them. He, literally, has no chemistry with anyone.

Mainly because he gets very few shifts a game, and always get offensive zone starts on the powerplay.

If he has 10 shifts in game one. 2 are on the power play. that's 20% right there.

You aren't going to use him in the defensive zone, so i'm not sure what the point is.

We aren't scoring.

I'm going to have to come up with my own subjective data collection on hockey players and use the information to draw conclusions on players without using any context what so ever.

Seems brilliant.

Coburn gets up and down the ice as well as he ever has, while Richards now labors and struggles out there. No one said every player regreses at 29, but you shouldn't be surprised that an undersized center who was never the best skater and has played a ton of games already in his career is starting to show clear signs of decline.

Good, that's exactly how a player like Lecavalier should be used. That's a good thing, not a bad thing.

yeah, but if he is going to get the benefit of those fortunes, a little more results should show. at least your coach is smart enough to try and cherry pick matchups

He plays shielded minutes, against lower competition, with a low DZ start % and still has bad CF% and CF% REL numbers.

Like the stats or not, that is an alarming trend.

Lets call it the FGML Advanced Stats

What we'll do is this. Each shift a player has, we'll count the amount of times he takes a full stride. Then count the half strides. Then count the seconds he coasts during his shift. This will give us our compete level %.

You do the first three games. If it turns out to be decent, I'll do the next 3 games.

Deal?

Jagr is slow as crap and still plays pretty well. It's about puck possession more so than speed. If they can't take the puck from you, it doesn't matter if you're slow.

Flyers have speed. They just don't know how to use it. Voracek is really started to grasp this I think.

- Flyersgod

THIS!! Exactly THIS. That's the key in today's game. Sure, speed and foot-work is clutch, but knowing how to protect the puck, where to work it, where to skate it, and having the ability to read the play out there is massive.
