sorry I think you have some wishful thinking going on here.
he'd take the 6.5 .. and it would be stupid of the avs not to go long term.. because then.. he goes to RFA status again.... and the qualifying offer is that much more.
a QO is not necessarily 1 year. thats arbitration.. different things. - Dozzer
There's also the selling point of he'll get to play with Duchene for that time. Given how his production has dropped without Duchene, that would probably be extremely enticing. |

The agents job is to make sure the kid is happy.. If that means he wants to stay, it is the agents job to get him the best deal in Colorado. - bixll
that would be 6.5 million
they have to qualify him for that. if they dont.. he becomes a FA able to sign anywhere he wants |

Sakic wont get to talk to him.. sakic will be talking to his agent.
that agent will ensure he maximizes the deal.. its his job. - Dozzer
Sakic schedules meetings with the player and agent in the same room. Its what he did with Duchene and Landeskog |

It's possible if he wants to stay with the team...depends what Sakic says to him. - Aaron_85
Gardiner stays. He's good insurance if something happens to Reilly and will be a good #3 D. Plus, you won't get sufficient value if he's dealt now.
As for O'Reilly. He's staying in COL, waste of time to think otherwise. Stastny is a potential though, but if not COL, then teams like TB, NYR (if they buy out RIchards), MON (would be a GREAT fit) all make more sense, even FLA if he's after a big $$ deal.

well i'll let you keep your dream for now... but the NHL just doesnt work that way anymore.
this kid will sign for 6.5 million per. if the avs dont give it to him, someone else will. |

Here's food for thought, does anyone think this may set a bad precedent for the team as a whole for the young guys?
What if Sakic moves him out for not thinking of the team first and taking a slight discount to stay and help them win? |

Maybe not after the year they had this year. I know Stastny said he wants to stay. |

Um Landeskog is already signed, as are Varlamov, Duchene and Mitchell (just listing everyone signed) and the Avs have plenty of Cap space for Radar, Stastny and Barrie. Elliott isn't even a full time nhler so he won't break the bank.
Not saying it is impossible but rather unlikely the Avs move O'Reilly. - martok2309
Edit:
Colorado has several contracts which they will need to address over the summer months, and given that Paul Stastny, Jamie McGinn, Tyson Barrie, and Stefan Elliott make that list, add to the fact that Stastny has been doing very well with Landeskog this year, they may have some reservations about offering top dollar to O’Reilly in order to sign him long-term. |

He will resign bw 5.5-6m on a long term deal...the whole 6.5m qualifying offer wont really play into this as a factor, its 6.5m if we did a 1 or 2 year deal to retain his rights. Signs long term before we have to qualify it doesnt matter as long as we play by the following rules.
Salary cant differ more than 50% from the 1st and last year of the contract and can not differ more than 30% year to year. 6.5m salary next seaon, and we can play with that number on 5-7 years depending on the contract length. Very managable contract now that he is worth around the 6m range |

Because some people don't 'get' capitalism? That's my guess. |

are you sure about that? IT was his dad who was causing the mess...Roy, Sakic and ROR's camp have all met regarding this. One of the first things Roy looked into coming into the Organization, and both parties agreed to pick up contract talks after the season. |

Nothing, provided the players, plays to the level of the contract he signs. poop happens, when they don't.

The old Avs management/ownership didn't help any either. |
