LA will certainly be looking to make a few changes after this series. |

Maybe it is the "system" that is the problem. Had I seen the Leafs look like they even tried to play defense then maybe I could say with a different system maybe they would be better but the players for the most part didn't even try. Don't you think if we hire a new coach that defense will be the number one thing he has to wok on? Hell our first line would skate like the wind when they have the puck trying to score a goal but would skate like they have skates full of lead coming back to try to get the puck back.
For me this team is lazy, trying to win the easy way. How often did they get outworked for two periods and try to win the game in the third by playing hard. Several of the wins we did have should have been loses being outshot the way we were but that's to the goalies we got a win. Playing with fire will eventually get you burned and that's what happened. We finally fell apart because of team defense. Had the forwards backchecked our D men would have looked much better.
Can a new coach change things, I don't know. How many coaches have we had here that got fired for missing the playoffs. When do we stop blaming the coach and start making the players accountable? - sparky
This is directly related to my last blog. Don't think as much blame belongs to Carlyle as people think....you've gotta wonder if anyone could have worked with that defense...they looked like a bunch of rooks....I suppose some were. |

the leafs have had 2 coaches in the past 6 years... its not like they fire them every season.
I am not saying keep the entire team as is... outside of Kessel, JVR, Rielly, Gardiner and Kadri move anyone you want ... all I am saying is dump the coach also ..I have seen enough and read enough data to see there is a problem with the teams he coaches

I still maintain that Gardiner is expendable...Leafs have enough offensive minded guys and not enough "Under-armour slogan" types |

not talking overhaul, but they'll want to bring in some fresh blood. sometimes things get stale. can definitely see a guy like Richards moving. |

i've said many times that i believe Toronto's defensive problems are as much a forward issue as a defencemen issue. the D isn't great, no doubt, but they just don't get the support they need from the forwards. when you watch the playoffs, that's something a lot of teams have in common: the forwards apply themselves at both ends of the ice. the Leaf forwards, particularly the top 6, don't do this enough. it makes the D look worse than it is. |

If Gardiner goes it should be for a younger player with as much upside.. like a Coutorier, Strome etc.. not another gleason type |

this is the point where the LA kings can retool... trade an aging Center who is trending down for a decent return of young players and picks .. to a team like the leafs who are desperate

This is where you see the fundamental differences between a coach who needs to win right now to save his job and an organization trying to build a perpetual contender. Question the coaches motives every step of the way.
Winning sure does ease the burden and dangers of desperation and buys everyone some time. |

Teams were licking their lips as soon as we went on the pp - I'm pretty sure our D stink, forwards of course could have helped but.....our D stink. |
