We may have been third but our defense was horrible. it was a combination of our goalies being first star every game and our first line being on fire. Once the players stopped scoring and our goalies came down to earth our weakness was even more glaring.

Getting a new coach doesn't bother me IF you tell me who we are replacing him with. Which better coaches are out there eating potato chips on the couch watch the playoffs? I am guessing once the playoffs are over some coaches will get fired and then maybe we might have better options.

But why don't you like who we got? Our coach wanting us to play better defense which sounds like a good plan to me. It's the players who refuse to play that style that should be leaving.

this part I dont understand. at what point does it become the system? keep bringing in more Clarkson, gleason, bolland type players? None of these moves helped

Because he went fishing on days off? Thats absurd to make that conclusion based on what he does away from hockey in his spare time. Is he supposed to mope around the house until next season because they didnt make the playoffs

At some point you have to hold yourself accountable. Realize who you play for, just how much resentment there is over the collapse and how fresh the wound still is.

I have a hard time saying "oh poor him." about a guy set to make 8 million dollars next year.

So many Leafs said dumb poop at bad times this year

The bones of the team are very good and can be built on
Goaltending? check
First line? check

Coach and D need addressing....

For years Leaf fans have been dying for a legit #1 goaltender and a first line that doesn't consist of poop like Stajan or Antropov..... we got em finally and there's no optimism?

- Mr_Smokey

the entire D needs to be revamped.. secondary scoring is completely up and down

our checking and PK are horrid.

its a longer road than you'd think i bet.

Show a little passion towards what your being paid 8 mill to do. Could have said it much better like..

Nothing takes the mind off of the playoffs like fishing or Fishing, the only thing better with the boys is playoff hockey.

The way he said it is everything, not him going fishing himself. Mourning period bud, didnt respect it!

Give away the team for all the draft picks next year. Rebuild new team. Maybe create a decent team and get rid of the mess were in now.

I'd give Clarkson away for free right now. Put him on waivers, use the money for something better. Didn't cost us anything to get, but is costing us to keep.

Checking and PK can be addressed in FA and with coaching

secondary scoring is harder to fix but really was it that bad? Kadri and Lupul seem to have little chemistry but both scored 20 and are certainly capable of better seasons. Impossible for Clarkson to have a worse season. You could go into next year with those 3 on the 2nd line and it won't be that bad.

None of them played a full season

If we just keep trading guys every 50 games you will probably keep getting the same results

Let's hope 2014-2015 is the year we crack the top 8

you really cling to the healthy full season excuse?

the leafs were crap from game 1 .. spending most of the game in the d-zone .. it didnt matter what players were in the lineup ..same result.. as the season wore on it actually got worse. insane sv% and a smoking 1st line for 20 games is what kept the leafs afloat.

Give him a break - he is due to start making $10M next year - this year he was paid $5.4M

So if he disappears next year - then really give it to him as he will be taking home $10M

How does a guy hold himself accountable in the off season. Playing in this media mad market, i would think it does a guy good to get the (frank) away. I dont see how that means he has no heart or passion for the team, which is the point i was arguing against in the original post. And sure he makes 8 milly, but hes still a dude

its not that bad

just need to stabalize the D and bring a different coaching philosophy to the table

also need some big game grinders.

get rid of franson, gardiner, raymond, orr, mcclaren, fill out the roster spots with marlies and the odd UFA

Maybe it is the "system" that is the problem. Had I seen the Leafs look like they even tried to play defense then maybe I could say with a different system maybe they would be better but the players for the most part didn't even try. Don't you think if we hire a new coach that defense will be the number one thing he has to wok on? Hell our first line would skate like the wind when they have the puck trying to score a goal but would skate like they have skates full of lead coming back to try to get the puck back.

For me this team is lazy, trying to win the easy way. How often did they get outworked for two periods and try to win the game in the third by playing hard. Several of the wins we did have should have been loses being outshot the way we were but that's to the goalies we got a win. Playing with fire will eventually get you burned and that's what happened. We finally fell apart because of team defense. Had the forwards backchecked our D men would have looked much better.

Can a new coach change things, I don't know. How many coaches have we had here that got fired for missing the playoffs. When do we stop blaming the coach and start making the players accountable?

Yes we dumped players that helped us last year - thinking that we brought in replacements and then they got hurt - not tough to see what happened

Grabo out Bolaand in - Bolland out - no real replacement

C
Mac out Clarkson in - bad start - tough year

Franson was good - Franson sucked - pretty much threw our D a curve ball.

We need a few moves and we should be able to crack the top 8 - no?

yep, and defensemen who are unwilling to backcheck with 110% effort when they cough up the puck cost them too many games.
