Edmonton was the 3rd worst team in the league. Your definition of shrewd must be different then mine.

I get waiting for the right deal. That's what I mean when I said the majority of GM's prefer the slow death than actually taking a chance on improving their team if it meant they might lose a trade and have to face the media and fan base. MacTavish will ride out his term never winning the cup or possible never making the playoffs in his quest to get fair value for his players. Just like Darcy Regier did in buffalo and David Poili and Don Maloney are doing in Nashville and Phoenix right now.

So if he trades his players for a crappy return they'll make the playoffs and win the Cup?

I think most people outside of Edmonton would disagree with you.

Except neither Poile nor Maloney started with the pieces we now have to work with, and they along with Regier made the playoffs many many times.

Let's put it this way: When's the last time a GM made a desperation trade that made his team unarguably better?

hes been the gm for a year.

in that time he's added perron, fasth, scrivens, Hendricks, Gordon, ference, bryzgalov, joensuu,

moved horcoff, dubnyk, bryzgalov, hemsky, pajaarvi

he's revamped a team that's attempting to move forward from oblivion, added needed pieces and given them chance to develop.

if big move comes along, he'll make it. but im certainly glad he doesn't subscribe to your style of gm'ing;
"well i cant get much else than Coburn, so eff it, may as well give TWO pieces for him (both of which id be hesitant to do straight up) and some extra picks that we don't need"

you really have no idea what ur talking about do you?

exactly

since we don't have much else, we should accept losing trades and wasting assets. this will make us better

I bet so too.

I don't think either have proved a ton, frankly. And last year Yakupov was the top-scoring rookie in the league and Murray was injured all year so we know how quickly perceptions can change.

Doesn't make them any more right. He's proven that he can play sheltered top-4 minutes (high O-zone starts on the team) on a fairly deep D corps in Columbus who, by the way, has a much better collection of two-way forwards to support him as well. Were he in Edmonton, he'd have had a similar season to those of Schultz and Petry.

The best thing MacT has done is not come to the bargaining table with the stench of desperation on him.

If he had, he'd have traded at least Klefbom + 9th + 2nd rounder for Schneider, the reported Mike Gillis markup.

8 months ago MacT is praised for rebuffing a now-fired GM, and now he's failing because he doesn't pull the trigger on moves like that?

this

after their rookie years, not a word was mentioned. cause the haters don't post on success, only failure. (one of the reasons we generally get so many of them)

murray looks like he might be real good. id like to have him. and hesitantly say he might have been the better long term choice.

but if yaks scores 30+ on a yearly basis, and nurse, klefbom etc develop, which are all plausible; i think we made the right choice

this could be the single greatest line ever written by a hockeybuzz blogger:

I believe it's smartest of we wait till everyone is developed. I have no problem with it. I'd rather wait then trade away our young core for garbage and have them come back and burn us when they're ready, which is only a couple years away (for most). It'll be well worth the wait.

yeah, don't get me wrong, I'd love Murray.

I think adding Schultz right before that draft had a lot to do with going for Yakupov instead.

Not saying it was either Schultz or Murray, but I'm very pleased to have Schultz and Yakupov.

It would take a ridiculous overpay for the Oil to move Hall
- robin_steele264

You can't expect to get a top 10 D-man for less. Teams rarely trade top 10 players, so I doubt this is in the works.

[T]he Edmonton Oilers are putting together a major package for a big time top two defenseman on a team that is still playing in the NHL playoffs...

Doesn't necessarily say a top-10 Dman; just a "big-time" top-2 Dman.

Bingo.

Although I think Eberle who may be a top 25 winger in the game + a 3rd overall gets you pretty close
