I think it's silly for anyone to be offended to be honest. Who takes these guys seriously? - DoubleDown
I refuse to listen to any of Don Cherry. But the fact that our tax dollars helps fund CBC, I do find it insulting. |

So how is that related to the ref being French again?
I was the first one to say that that call was (frank)ed up but how does that have to be related to the referee's language? - TimBits
Right, you'd never complain if a Boston ref made a game changing call in Boston against the Habs. Face it, he was talking about the league's image and the perception of the fans in OTHER markets. |

Wow another PP for Columbus?!?! Anyone check to see if the ref is from Akron? - DoubleDown
Hey remember when that American ref was jobbing the canadian women's team in Salt Lake City ? Nobody complained then. |

Oh. I though he was saying the league is opening itself up to criticism by doing so. I also think it's hilarious that people are saying Maclean is racist due to his stance on Burrows last time. However, the referee in question was also French.
I'm sick of this racism crap. Let's talk about english coaching candidates for the Habs in case Therrien gets fired in the next couple of years. - golfingsince
It was a racist comment. |

The fact that you even believe that is beyond comical. |

I completely agree that that's how everyone sees it and that's how everyone thinks. But the point is more that the only reason people think this is because it's Quebec. We all know this. I accept it. I think it's a bit unfair to question a ref's integrity like that but whatever. |

Again, see Salt Lake City. My father is a french speaking Habs fan and didn't find it offensive whatsoever. Like it or not, the integrity of officials gets questioned all the time. Burrows did it and got punished for it, yet Auger was quietly swept out of the league. |

We all know that there would never be a comment like that about Alberta. And HNIC has been alienating Quebec for years now. The reaction isn't surprising. - DoubleDown
is it me, or they all (on HNIC) sound kind of pissy since the Rogers deal? |

I'm not offended at all. And I think this is a Quebec issue not a French issue. I know what you mean about the US ref. but that was what 13 penalties? And you're taking about women's hockey not the NHL. We had 1 controversial call that even Kerry Fraser said, by the book, it was the right call. It just seems like rabble rousing. There are a lot of French refs. Are we gonna go into hysterics now every time one of them makes a call that benefits Montreal?
And do you honestly think that if this was Toronto-Tampa and the ref was from Timmins, this would have been brought up? |

Still, Maclean didn't say anything when Stock asked if Dave Jackson could have reffed the game. |

If he didn't make the call and the Lightning score, Habs fans would be screaming about the missed call and be told by everyone else to STFU and stop whining.
The hilarious thing in all of this is that no one is debating that it was a penalty, only that it was called by a french canadian. I don't think the comments were racist, but rather as DD has stated, more of the same from HNIC. |

Don't think the reference to "French" wasn't specifically about language he speaks but more of a means of identification. |

Meh, the guy made a comment and apologized for it. I don't think it was a big deal and certainly not worth getting fired over. I also don't find it racist in the least. As far as i'm concerned it's a dead issue. |
